뉴욕뉴저지항만청이 9.11테러로 붕괴된 ‘월드 트레이드 센터’ 이름을 27년 전 비영리재단에 단돈 10달러에 팔았다고 데일리뉴스가 9일 보도했다.


뉴욕뉴저지항만청의 빌 바로니 부청장은 “월드트레이드센터 이름을 월드트레이드협회(WTCA)에 10달러에 팔아버린 비밀거래를 조사하고 있다”고 밝혔다.


데일리뉴스는 비영리재단인 월드트레이드협회(WTCA)의 전 임원의 말을 인용, WTCA가 명칭 라이센스 사업으로 수백만 달러를 벌어들였다고 전했다.


이와 함께 항만청은 이름값 대신 월드트레이드센터 자리에 들어서는 ‘원 WTC타워’의 사무공간을 무상으로 임대하는 방안도 진행하고 있다. 사무공간의 임대료는 연 50만 달러 수준이다.


그러나 월드트레이드협회(WTCA)는 “처음부터 이같은 거래가 비밀이 아니었다”고 부인했다. WTCA의 법률담당 스콧 리치 자문역은 “내가 알기로는 1986년 이같은 협상이 시작되면서 외부에 공개됐다. 당시 항만청의 책임자와 사인도 했다”고 지적했다.


미국의 독립기념일 해를 상징하는 1776피트(약540m) 높이의 ‘원WTC타워’는 내년초 완공을 앞두고 있다.

1 World Trade Center


One World Trade Center (also 1 World Trade Center or 1 WTC, formerly known as the Freedom Tower) is the primary building of the new World Trade Center complex in New York City's Lower Manhattan.


The 104-story supertall skyscraper stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre (6.5 ha) World Trade Center site, occupying the former location of the original 6 World Trade Center.


The building is bordered to the west by West Street, to the north by Vesey Street, to the south by Fulton Street, and to the east by Washington Street. Construction on below-ground utility relocations, footings, and foundations for the building began on April 27, 2006. On March 30, 2009, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that the building would be known by its legal name, One World Trade Center, rather than the colloquial name, Freedom Tower.


The tower's steel structure topped out on August 30, 2012. On May 10, 2013, the final component of the skyscraper's spire was installed, making One World Trade Center the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the fourth-tallest building in the world by pinnacle height. Its spire reaches a symbolic height of 1,776 feet (541 m) in reference to the year of the United States Declaration of Independence.


It has been the tallest building in New York City since April 30, 2012, when it surpassed the height of the Empire State Building. The new World Trade Center complex will also feature three other high-rise office buildings, located along Greenwich Street, and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, located just south of One World Trade Center, where the Twin Towers once stood.


The construction is part of an effort to memorialize and rebuild following the destruction of the original World Trade Center complex during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
