On the way to Roanoke, a cozy valley under the Blue Ridge Mountain when I pass the city called Christianburg , a car suddenly stopped in front of me and a student came up to me with two bottles of water. He was a student at Virginia Tech, Virginia, working part-time at Pizza Hut. Seeing me pushing a cart with a Korean national flag while working there, He rushed at me hurriedly. "Aren't you Mr. Kang MyongKu, are you?" He calls my name correctly. It's amazing that my name comes out of the mouths of strangers. What¡¯s more, it¡¯s in a mountain village in Virginia. He said he read the news about me when I turned the halfway point. It's been a month and half ago, and he remembered my name exactly. I thought that students of prestigious universities have the extraordinary brains as expected, but I was surprised and felt a little bit flattered unknowingly. It's a matter of a real pride to me if my marathon became a pride and a hope to young people. He asks me to take a picture with him saying he wants to show off to his friends.

Modern Western civilization has developed with speed and efficiency as the number one value. During the U.S. Continental Marathon, I also met a trailer driver who does transcontinental trip two times a week, persons whose entire family traveled across the continent together by car, and a person who traveled across the continent on bicycle. A man who rode a horse across the continent stopped me and handed me his business card. But what's strange is that all those men of modern education praised me highly in unison. To me, who, without using any mechanical device, pushes a cart foolishly and runs slowly like a turtle every day.

Perhaps the precious value that modern civilization overlooks lies elsewhere. There is something more precious than simple speed, visible competitiveness and many products. If we saw it, heard it, felt it, met it, thought it, and realized it, nothing would be more efficient than that. Perhaps in just a few decades, this present times might be considered as a senseless dark age.

Running down the road, I pass the carcass of wild animals more than a dozen a day. Among them, there are slow animals like turtles, but there are countless fast and quick animals like coyotes, rabbits and squirrels. The animals with their wild speed can't adapt themselves to the tremendous speed of the car and were killed.

I'm short-tempered, but the rate of rotation of my brain is slow and I'm slow in motion. So if others rush me on something, I try to hurry up, but my movements are slow and my brain is moving slowly, so everything is twisted. I became a problem soldier in the army because of ¡®first come, first served¡¯. So my life in the army has gone awry. Even so, I got above average grade while running a marathon because I found myself getting better and better as I tried my best without competing with anyone. If we do slowly what we like, enjoying doing it, we will develop without even realizing it.

Running slowly, I came to know a neighbor who had lived in the same house for ten years but whom I¡¯ve not known, and I could see the flowers blooming beautifully in the garden of the neighborhood that I had passed by. I could hear birds singing in the park. Nothing has changed in the world, but as I started running slowly, I began to see things that I couldn't see before, and the world looked more beautiful. Running slowly made me enjoy the moment. In this era when fastness is at its best value, slowness is an active choice to slow down in order to look and feel tenderly the things at every corner. I had to throw away a lot for this marathon trip. I needed a firm resolution to have this slow time. Getting up an hour earlier than usual and running require an active and determined decision. That small firmness leads to great change.

There was no motel in the town of Elliston, so I had to sleep in a tent on the road, but then Mr. Oh Shim-moo, whom I knew through an acquaintance, contacted me. He asks me to sleep at his house for the night, saying he lives in Noanoke, about 15 kilometers away from where I arrive today, I say, ¡°It's nice to get your favor one night, but if I go to your house in the car, you have to drop me off here early tomorrow morning, so it's too inconvenient to you.¡± And he says, "I'm happy to do that, because you do a great challenge." He adds that he is so proud of being a Korean living abroad. Mr. Oh Shin-moo, who had lived in Roanoke for 40 years, came and carried me home with my cart in his car and made me a dinner with Samgyeopsal or roasted pork. He made me a comfortable night's sleep and got me back to the spot the next early morning. There is a golden retriever dog in his house and its fur is much longer than the average dog, so I first knew it was a Chinese lion dog.

For convenience¡¯ sake, we made an appointment at McDonald's to meet, but she had arrived before I arrived and waited for me. We met for the first time, but we have been on frequent phone calls and kakaotalk, so we were never unfamiliar. She said, "I am a citizen of the U.S. after marrying an American citizen, but when I see the Taegeukgi alone, my heart is beating fast. I feel like I want to help if any Korean do something proud." There was a picnic table outside and a rest area with a roof over it, so we moved around and chatted over the carefully packed food together. She said she wanted to run a transcontinental marathon if she had a chance. She said her husband had promised to follow her by driving a camping car. The husband's family is all a marathon family who all recoded sub-three. If we finish the marathon within three hours, it is called ¡®sub-3¡¯ or ¡®he flower of an amateur marathon¡¯. Her father-in-law, her brother-in-law, and her husband are all sub-three recorders. What a great marathon family!

She left, and there was no motel in the town, so I thought it would be perfect to sleep on the spot. I left the stroller by the picnic table and went in the McDonald's bathroom to wash my hands. When I came out, a sheriff was called in there. He says that someone reported that someone had left a baby in a stroller. He says that he saw me running when I entered the village. But he asks me politely to let him see inside the stroller because he got a report. I opened the lid of the stroller and showed it. The sheriff checked all inside and said, "You, great! Take a rest." And when he tried to pull out the car backward, he hit the car to a pole. I felt sorry for nothing.

The nerves that once became tense do not abate soon. It is uncomfortable to sleep with a stranger nearby . Rather than being uncomfortable, it is frightening and scary. I thought it would be better if she were a man. I couldn't sleep because of the timid worry that I would be devastated, if I was involved in something like a sex scandal, Because of that timidity, I couldn't ask her where she started and went to New Jersey, why she walked not by car, or whether she was a simple traveller, or if she could claim to be an adventurer who, like me, went out on her own to find out who she was in the turning of her life. I didn¡¯t solve all my questions about her and I crouched down all night and hurried to leave the place in a fit of fatigue long before the sun rose. I was not likely to be able to do anything unless I poured a tornado of worry into the street that I didn't know what was going on in my mind. I can't bear what is curious though I can bear to be hungry or tired, but I still wonder about it. While making such a bold journey, my timidity reveals itself everywhere.

Consideration and warmth for others is like a river flowing in winding while wetting the earth. It flows slowly, making the whole world green and rich. What we do for others by dividing the time that should be spent entirely on ourselves is both inefficient and against the law of competition. But kindness is the most efficient in settling all contradictions. So the wise man cares for others at the risk of immediate loss. Now I've come up with a view of the Colorado River flowing straight through the desert without wetting it.

This forest I run now seems to be more lively with my steps. How beautiful the river is, that flows gently in winding, wetting the whole world!
