지난 가을에 아주 신기한 일이 있었어요. 김현중이 나온 ‘장난스런 키스’ 라는 드라마가 있었잖아요. 그때 김현중에게 푹 빠져있던 전 항상 그 드라마를 챙겨봤답니다.
달달한 로맨스를 바탕으로 한 이 드라마는 10대들이 정말 좋아할 소재였죠. 모든걸 다 가진 꽃미남과 평범한 여학생의 로맨스를 주제로 한 이 드라마는, 저와 어느 10대들은 한번쯤 꿈꿔봤을 그런 소설같은 드라마였답니당.
한동안 드라마에 푹 빠져서 어딜가던 드라마 생각밖에 안나더군요 ㅋㅋ. 누군가와 이 드라마에 대해서 담소도 나누고 김현중이 얼마나 잘생겼는지에 대해서 즐겁게 얘기를 나누고 싶었지만, 제가 살고 있는 곳에는 미국애들만 있었기때문에 답답한 마음만 늘어갔죠.
그런데 어느날, 뜻밖에도 한국 드라마에 대해서 같이 얘기를 할 친구들이 생겼어요! 근데 놀라운 것은, 그 친구들이 바로 저랑 같은 학교인 미국친구들이였던것이에요! 정말 이런 일이 생길줄은 몰랐는데, 학교 점심시간때 미국여자애들이 그러더군요.
“써니, 너도 “장난스런 키스” (영어론 “Playful Kiss”) 라는 드라마 알아? 이거 한국드라마 맞지?” “헐! 너네들이 그 드라마는 어떻게 알아??” 라고 놀란 저에게 미국 친구들이 웃으면서 대답하더군요,
“아~심심해서 유투브 들어갔다가 발견했어. 누가 영어로 대사를 번역도 해서 진짜 재밌게 봤어! 그 남자 주인공 참 잘생겼더라~”하더군요. 미국 아이들하고 한국 드라마에 대해서 얘기하게 될 줄은 꿈에도 몰랐어요. 제가 가르쳐 준것도 아닌데..정말 반갑고 신기했답니다. ㅎㅎ.
어쨌든 그 뒤로, 애들이랑 같이 드라마도 보고 실컷 제가 좋아하는 김현중에 대해서도 얘기를 많이 했답니다! 애들한테 왜 이 드라마를 좋아하게 됐냐고 물어봤더니, 미국에서 인기많은 ‘가십걸’ 같은 많이 파격(?!)적인 드라마들과는 달리, 한국 드라마의 순수하고 풋풋한 느낌이 좋았다네요^^.
이번 일을 계기로, 유투브에 영어자막까지 넣어서 한국 드라마를 올리는 분들이 너무 고맙게 느껴지더라구요. 앞으론 저도 한국 드라마를 같이 공유할 수 있는 미국친구들이 생겨서 너무너무 행복하답니다~
Playful Kiss
Have you ever heard of “Playful Kiss”? It is a Korean drama which was very popular among teenagers. The main story of this drama was about a rich and handsome boy falling in love with a regular, ordinary girl.
The gorgeous main character in this t.v. show, Kim Hyun-Joong, caught my eye and I started watching it. It did not take long for me to get hooked to this show, but I was disappointed that I could not talk about the show with my friends, since they didn’t care about Korean t.v. shows.
Every time a funny or heart-warming scene came up during the drama, I had the urge to advertise the show to my friends, but I was pretty sure they would take little or no interest on Korean dramas.
Well, I was wrong about that. In fact, even before I mentioned this Korean drama, my friends came up to me and asked if I knew that drama. I was really surprised that they had watched it and loved it like I did.
From then on, my friends and I would talk about “Playful Kiss” and excitedly chat about how gorgeous the main character was and what a cute couple the two main characters made.
I asked them how they came across this Korean t.v. show, and they told me that while on Youtube, they saw the video with English translations and began watching it. They told me that unlike American shows like “Gossip Girl” and “Pretty Little Liars” which are very popular among teenagers, “Playful Kiss” had pure, sweet romance that didn’t have explicit topics.
I was really grateful for those who spent time translating Korean dramas, and I hope that more Americans will take interest on the Korean t.v. shows and its culture!
