Dear Friend--in the midst of mainstream media that is dominated by hawkish policy prescriptions, skepticism, and doubts on the current peace process led by two Koreas, one searches for strength and inspiration. Inspired by Pope Francis's Easter peace prayers for the Korean peninsula, I kindly send you blessings and goodwill notes that two Koreas have received from our friends in peace communities around the world for their difficult journey ahead. It is based on the vision of a unified and peaceful Korea’s serving as a bridge and gateway that connects Northeast Asia to Europe--from cities in the United States, to Japan, China, Russia, Central Asia and to Europe-- which will spur unprecedented economic prosperity, social and cultural global community: Northeast Asia-European Community.

The verdict is clear: the people welcomed Moon’s advances to the North. It seems that South Korea is ready to give peace and engagement another go after a decade of conservative rule marked by active efforts to isolate, undermine and shame North Korea.

Lastly, a Korean school girl who sought to bring a spring in 1919 through peaceful resistance against war and violence on a brutalized colonized Korea serve us as the biggest inspiration! We may not see the fruits of our peace action of today but our children and grandchildren may, and they may remember us, just like we honor the 19-year-old Yu Gwan-sun.

When a call for peaceful protests came in Spring 1919, a schoolgirl became the face of a nation’s collective yearning for freedom. She was influenced by her father, who taught her about Christianity and instilled traditional Confucian values of nationalism and civic awareness. Nine members of the Yu family — spanning three generations — were involved in the independence movement. Yu was an intelligent child who attended a nearby Presbyterian church and memorized Bible verses easily, according to curators at the Ewha Museum in Seoul. An American missionary, Alice J. Hammond Sharp, encouraged Yu to attend the Ewha school to advance her education, something few Korean women did at that time. The Korean Peninsula came under Japanese military rule three years after Yu was born. It was formally annexed in 1910, the start of a 35-year struggle for independence. Yu would not have remembered a free Korea, and she died long before liberation in August 1945.
