Dear Friend--the holidays are a time for happy reunions and vibrant festivities. For people who work for peace in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, this holiday season is a minefield of present discontent and fear of uncertain future. Yet, one finds some comfort in enduring people¡¯s spirit for peace.

Moon¡¯s pacifist leanings are the product of both faith and experience. He began his career as a democracy activist when South Korea was still a dictatorship and, like many in the movement, is a practicing Christian. His determination to seek peace echoes his beliefs as a devout Catholic, as does his commitment to public service and his social conservatism. When it comes to talking with Kim Jong Un, Moon certainly knows more about dealing with a dictatorship than his counterpart in the United States. His parents fled from the North as refugees. As he wrote in his book published in January: ¡°When peaceful reunification comes, the first thing I want to do is to take my 90-year-old mother and go to her hometown.¡±

North Korea poses no security threat to the United States – the huge disparity in power ensures that – but its successful defence of its independence does present a long-term challenge to US global hegemony. ¡¦War with North Korea means war with China. Some would go for that but it is a big decision, fraught with danger. No war but Trump¡¯ s incompetence and his empty bluster risks a precipitous decline in American credibility that extends far beyond the Korean issue. If Russiagate does not succeed in removing Trump from power, will thoughts turns to other, non-constitutional means?...There was a two-and-a-half month pause in public deterrent testing after the 15 September launch of the Hwasong-12. No doubt technical reasons were part of the reason but there was speculation that this was a message from Pyongyang to Washington.[93] If so, it was a unilateral freeze that complemented the Chinese/Russia freeze-for-freeze peace proposals.[94] Since there are back-channel communications in place, the Trump administration would have been well aware of the overture. In any case, the administration rejected the overture. It put North Korea back on the terrorism list on 20 November and made it clear that it was going ahead with massive airstrike drills in coordination with the South Korean air force.[95]

During the course of the three-year war, which both sides accuse one another of provoking, the U.S. dropped 635,000 tons of explosives on North Korea, including 32,557 tons of napalm, an incendiary liquid that can clear forested areas and cause devastating burns to human skin. (In constrast, the U.S. used 503,000 tons of bombs during the entire Pacific Theater of World War Two, according to a 2009 study by the Asia-Pacific Journal.) In a 1984 interview, Air Force Gen. Curtis LeMay, head of the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War, claimed U.S. bombs "killed off 20 percent of the population" and "targeted everything that moved in North Korea." These acts, largely ignored by the U.S.' collective memory, have deeply contributed to Pyongyang's contempt for the U.S. and especially its ongoing military presence on the Korean Peninsula. http://www.newsweek.com/us-forget-korean-war-led-crisis-north-592630

Increasingly anxious over possible military conflict, President Moon Jae-in of South Korea proposed this month that his country and the United States postpone their joint military exercises, which were originally expected to start in late February.
Mr. Moon said the annual exercises, which North Korea has denounced as rehearsals for an invasion, could be postponed until after South Korea hosted the Winter Olympics in February and the Paralympics in March. Whether the allies will eventually delay the drills depends on whether North Korea conducts any weapons tests in the weeks leading up to the Games, South Korean officials said. Mr. Moon hopes to create a lull in the nuclear standoff during the Olympics and use it as momentum to start talks with North Korea. When North Korea said it completed its nuclear force following its ICBM test in November, some analysts said the North might now be open to stopping its program there and to start negotiating.

This is how Kim would sell this to his people: The Kim dynasty looked America straight into the eye with great courage and undeniable righteousness, and America blinked first. Furthermore, presenting Kim Jong-un an opportunity to proclaim a meaningful historical place in the ethnography of the Korean people might be too tempting to refuse. In the end, let Kim have his personal victory if it means a nuclear-free Korea and no more North Korean people suffering needlessly. The sooner, the better.
