Let us pray for our brothers in the north¡¦ we are one family¡¦Help us reach unity. You can do it. So that there are no victors or vanquished. Just one family, only brothers¡¦ You are brothers who speak the same language¡¦ think of brothers in the north. They speak the same language and when in a family the same language is spoken there is a human hope. Pope Francis on Korean unity.

First, we congratulate you for holding the historic U.S.-DPRK Summit with Chairman Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12 and thank you for your decision to suspend the large-scale U.S.-ROK joint war drills that have provoked North Korea for decades....Prioritize ending the existing state of war in Korea. In observance of the 65th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Agreement in July 1953, organize a second major summit in 2018 to include leaders of the U.S., DPRK, ROK (South Korea), and China. The purpose of this summit would be to issue a Joint Declaration to finally end the Korean War by replacing the Armistice Agreement with a lasting Peace Treaty.

2. North Korean Denuclearization Potentially Moving In ¡®Positive Direction¡¯: Gen. Hyten

¡°From my perspective, the belief in a potential denuclearization of North Korea has changed,¡± Hyten told me at a press roundtable during Strategic Command¡¯s annual deterrence conference. ¡°The direction that things are moving is a positive direction. I don¡¯t think anyone can deny that. ¡°That is a stark contrast to what we heard last year ago from Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, who said Kim Jong-un ¡°does not intend to negotiate those (nuclear) capabilities away at any price.¡±

While they are very skeptical because they have been through all these ups and downs with the North Koreans, the fact is they have to live with the North Koreans as their neighbors, and they would much rather choose peace and reconciliation than living under the threat of nuclear war. That, I think, is something that we, here in the United States, need to remember. This is a country that is so far away from ours, but the people living there have to think about what they want for their long term future.

4. 65 years after pilot vanished in Korean War, family has hope for return of remains.

After 65 years of waiting and hoping, he knows his uncle's remains may never be returned from North Korea, where the Navy pilot was shot down at war in 1953. But still, he hopes. Which is why the 70-year-old retired businessman from Prior Lake wrote to President Donald Trump in June encouraging him to somehow, some way, use his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to help bring back the remains of Korean War veterans missing in action, including his uncle, Navy Cmdr. John Micheel.

"I wanted to let the president know that there are people in the heartland who are watching ¡¦ and waiting," Arneson said Thursday. http://m.startribune.com/65-years-after-pilot-vanished-in-korean-war-family-has-hope-for-return-of-remains/489948241/

5. David Ignatius. Op-ed. Trump gets the headline on North Korea. But keep an eye on South Korea. The Washington Post.

Trump gets the headlines when it comes to North Korea. But the real driver may be inter-Korean contacts. Kim signaled in a speech Jan. 1 that he wanted to leverage his nuclear-weapons capability for economic development, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in responded boldly with his Olympic diplomacy. Trump embraced this opening, but he didn¡¯t create it¡¦.South Korean Ambassador to the United States Cho Yoon-je explained the importance of the end-of-war declaration and other confidence-building measures as a bridge to denuclearization in an interview last week. ¡°It is our firm belief that the enhanced exchange and communications between the two Koreas will help facilitate the denuclearization dialogue,¡± he said. In other words, the path from Pyongyang to Washington may lead through Seoul.

Look at the Rhine that flows by us. It symbolizes history; the latter is not static. You can dam this river, it is technically possible. But then it will overflow its banks and will find another way to reach the sea. And this is how it is with Germany unity. You can try to prevent it from coming about, and then both of us may not live long enough to see it. But, just as certain as the Rhine will flow to the sea, just as certain Germany unity will comeand also European unity. Helmut Kohl, former chancellor of West Germany
