뉴욕 한인학부모들이 오바마 대통령의 히로시마 방문은 수많은 참전용사들에 대한 모독(冒瀆)이라고 강하게 비판하는 성명서를 발표했다.
뉴욕한인학부모협회(공동회장 최윤희 라정미)는 지난 13일 성명서를 통해 "오바마 대통령이 현직 최초로 히로시마를 방문하는 것은 교육에 악영향을 주고 수많은 참전군에 대한 모독이다. 2차대전 참전용사인 토마스 칼리간씨는 만약에 일본에 원자폭탄이 투하(投下)되지 않았으면 지금 생존해 있지 않았다"며 참전용사들의 입장을 전했다.
성명은 "근래에 출간된 많은 도서들은 원자폭탄이 전쟁을 막지 않았으면 더 많은 미국인, 일본인들과 그외의 많은 사망자가 있었을 것이라고 확신하고 있다"면서 "오마바대통령은 첫 현직 대통령으로 히로시마를 방문 했다는 기록을 세우겠지만 원자폭탄의 투하가 전쟁을 종식 (終熄)시키는 유일한 방법이었던 것을 인식하여야 한다"고 강조했다.
이어 "일본공립학교에서는 일본이 동남아시아, 한국과 일본에서 저지른 전범행위와 히로시마에 원자폭탄을 투하한 배경과 원인에 대해서 교육하지 않고 원자폭탄에 대한 피해만 전 세계를 향하여 홍보하고 있다. 매년 일본으로 여름 방문 프로그램을 가는 사회과목을 가르치는 교사들은 필히 히로시마에 들려야 한다"고 전했다.
뉴욕한인학부모협회는 "일본문부성이 주위국가에 자행(恣行)한 전쟁범죄와 수치스러운 역사를 교육하지 않는 것은 지극히 위험한 일이며, 원폭투하 피해에 대해서만 잘못 가르치는 상황에서 현직 미국대통령의 방문은 일본인으로 하여금 사과를 받은듯한 착각을 일으킬 수 있다"고 우려했다.
성명은 "오바마대통령은 나라를 지키기위해 싸운 참전용사들을 잊지 말아야 하며 존 캐리 국무장관과 캐롤라인 케네디 일본대사가 원폭피해자 추모식에 참여한 것으로도 충분히 조의(弔意)를 표한 것"이라고 지적했다.
또한 "아베 신조 수상과 일본 정부는 위안부 동상 철거(撤去)를 요구할게 아니라 독일국민이 베를린 국회의사당 바로 앞에 유태인 학살 기념 공원을 설립한 것 같이 위안부 동상을 도쿄의 정부청사 앞으로 이전해야 할 것"이라고 훈계했다.

The White House has announced that President Obama will become the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima. President Obama’s visit to Hiroshima is bad influence on education and sapping the face of hundreds and thousands of veterans.
Thomas Colligan, who is World War II veteran wouldn’t be here with us if the U.S. didn’t stop the war with atomic bombs. Many books were published to prove the fact; there have been much more death of American and Japanese as well as others if U.S. didn’t stop the war with bombs. President Obama wants to be the record breaker to be the first sitting president to visit Hiroshima to pay the respect his understanding of the casualties from the atomic bombs. He seems that he didn’t study in school the reason the U.S. had to drop the bombs because there was no other option to stop the war.
The Japanese public school system never teaches the Japanese war criminal act against South Asia, Korea, and China. Furthermore they do not teach why atomic bombs were dropped in Japan. Yet they publicized and preach to the world how terrible it is that U.S. dropped the bombs. Every teacher goes to a two weeks Summer Social Studies Program it is mandatory to go to the Hiroshima. The Japanese education system has no intention to learn from their wrong doing and not teaching their shameful past history to the future generations in school, is misleading and dangerous. They need to teach their children to not make the same mistakes and not promote the world peace and the detail background of the atomic bombs incidents.
This visit of the current U.S. president to visit Hiroshima will give fantastic misunderstanding to Japanese prime minister and government who has asked Korean Government to remove the “Comfort woman” statue located in front of Japanese embassy in Seoul. This Comfort woman stature should move to the right front of the Japanese government building in Tokyo Japan to teach their nation just like German established the Jewish Holocaust Memorial right in front of congress building in Berlin.
The President Obama cannot ignore nor disrespect the veterans who fought for the country. The Secretary of State John Carry and the U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy’s visit to Hiroshima and attended the ceremony dedicated the flower was sufficient.
