Re: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe¡¯s speech to a joint session of Congress.

As a US citizen and your constituent, I am writing to ask you to write to House Speaker John Boehner to allow Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to deliver his speech in a joint session of Congress when he visits the US in May 2015 on the condition that he not visit the controversial Yasukuni Shrine and Japan stop anti-American distortions of the history of the Pacific War.

All American citizens welcome the opportunity of the head of government of a good ally to address the Congress, as long as that ally does not engage in a deliberate distortion of history which is essential to the United States, such as the history of the conduct of the Second World War.

While Prime Minister Abe is welcome, as America¡¯s good ally, to Washington, there should be assurances given that he will not do anything further to promote anti-American distortions of the history of the Pacific War.

The House Chamber is sacred ground in American history, where President Roosevelt gave his ¡°date which will live in infamy¡± speech the day after the Pearl Harbor attack and where Congress then declared war on Imperial Japan NOT Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. If Prime Minister Abe appears in the same location as Franklin Roosevelt and then subsequently honors in Tokyo those who launched the Pearl Harbor attack this is disrespectful to the memory of both President Roosevelt and America¡¯s World War II generation.

Some in the leadership in the Japanese Government today continue efforts to distort World War II history. The Japanese Government most recently demanded that an American textbook manufacturer. McGraw-Hill, change its depiction of Imperial Japan¡¯s war crimes during World War II, which include the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March, the Comfort Women tragedy and the Nanking Massacre.

Some of Japan¡¯s opinion leaders have even criticized the sufferings of U.S. Prisoners of War, such as the late hero Louis Zamperini as depicted in the recent film ¡°Unbroken,¡± as distortions and even outright lies.

The Yushukan Museum in Tokyo suggests that President Roosevelt was responsible for the Pearl Harbor attack due to his oil embargo and that Imperial Japan had no choice but to attack..

Others suggest that the Tokyo war crimes tribunal was ¡°victor¡¯s justice,¡± and that Hideki Tojo is not the war criminal for his attack on Pearl Harbor. They claim, instead, that President Harry Truman is a war criminal for dropping atomic bombs on innocent Japanese people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These claims ignore the fact that the Government of Japan accepted the verdicts of the Tokyo Tribunal when it signed the Treaty of San Francisco.

No loyal American can let these historic distortions stand without challenging them. This is a core issue for the communities of U.S. citizens that you are representing.

Therefore, I would like to urge you to write a letter to Speaker Boehner asking that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe¡¯s speech in a joint session of Congress should be on the condition that he not visit the controversial Yasukuni Shrine and Japan stop anti-American distortions of the history of the Pacific War.

As your constituent, I feel that this issue is of utmost importance and relevance to the future of our country and again request your immediate action.

Sincerely,

_______________________________________
