Dear Ms Colligan:

Your email regarding a stained glass window in the ARCH Building at Penn was forwarded to me. I am Will Gipson, Associate Vice Provost for Equity and Access, and I have met and corresponded with several of the students who have also raised concerns about this window after the building¡¯s recent restoration.

I am pleased to share with you that a group of Penn architectural and archival experts met with the student on February 24 to discuss this important issue. We had an informational and educational gathering, with the students thoughtfully sharing with us the historical context of the image and their hurt feelings upon seeing it in the ARCH.

Penn scholars shared the building¡¯s history with the students, explaining that the building that is now the ARCH was built in 1928 by an non-University group, the Christian Association, which owned the building until 1999. The window in question has been in that spot since 1928 and is part of a grouping of many crests/coats of arms/symbols that appear to represent the international outreach of the time, as the Christian Association had missions around the world and worked closely with international students. We have identified other windows that seem to represent China, France, and England, to name a few countries. Again, they are symbols, not necessarily flags.

The students appreciated this information and explanation, and the opportunity to be heard. They were clear that they wanted us to research the windows and create a permanent marker that would hang at the entrance to this room or near the window itself explaining the context of the grouping of the windows and the particular impact of the image in question.

We also agreed to produce a guide to all of the stained glass windows in the ARCH as a way to more thoroughly detail the images and issues. And, we are hopeful we can record a Penn scholar discussing the image in question for use as a new stop on the popular audio ¡°cellphone¡± tour.
At this writing, in just a day over a month since we first met with the students, staff researchers are at a point where we will be inviting students to meet with us again so that we can share the language for the marker and its placement.

Thank you for your thoughtful concern.

Sincerely,

Rev. William C. Gipson
