AHL Foundation Announces 2021 Artist Fellowship Recipients

Heehyun Choi ¡¤ Gyun Hur ¡¤ Dohee Lee ¡¤ Yozmit

AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting contemporary artists of Korean descent, is proud to present the recipients of the 2021 3rd Annual AHL Artist Fellowship: Heehyun Choi, Gyun Hur, Dohee Lee, and Yozmit. Each artist fellow will receive a stipend of $5,000 and the opportunity to showcase their work in a group exhibition in New York in Spring 2022 and participate in a mentoring program with various prominent art professionals.

Founded in 2003, AHL Foundation is dedicated to both enhancing access to contemporary art in the Korean community through art education programming and supporting Korean artists active in the United States through award, fellowship, and exhibition opportunities. The AHL Artist Fellowship program was established in 2019 thanks to generous support from the Dow Kim Family Foundation. The jurors for this year¡¯s artist fellowship were Stephanie Jeanjean, Ph.D. (Adjunct Assistant Professor, Cooper Union and Sotheby¡¯s Institute of Art), Sara Raza (International Curator & Writer / Founder and Director, Studio Punk Orientalism), and Lumi Tan (Senior Curator, The Kitchen).

Heehyun Choi is a moving image artist based in Los Angeles, CA, and Seoul, South Korea. Her works are grounded in her interest in discussing cinema from a structuralist viewpoint and examining the materiality and virtuality of image. Choi received an MFA in Film & Video at California Institute of the Arts. Her films have been selected for various film festivals, including Edinburgh International Film Festival, Onion City Experimental Film+Video Festival, Seoul Independent Film Festival, IndieForum, and Seoul International ALT Cinema & Media Festival (Nemaf).

Gyun Hur is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose experience as an immigrant daughter deeply fuels her practice. Born in South Korea, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia with her family at the age of 13. She currently lives in Brooklyn and teaches at Parsons School of Design. Gyun recently completed the Stove Works Residency, Bronx Museum AIM Fellowship, and Danspace Project Writer-in-Residency. She is a recipient of The Hudgens Prize, Artadia Award, and more. Her works have been featured in Hyperallergic, The Cut, Art In America, Art Paper, Sculpture, Art Asia Pacific, Public Art Magazine Korea, and several other publications. Her interest in art making in public space led her to holding artist presentations at the TEDxCentennial Women, Living Walls: The City Speaks, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The New School, and many others. Gyun has contributed as an artist-writer in fLoromancy, The Brooklyn Rail, and The Forgetory.

Dohee Lee weaves her multiple virtuosities in drumming, dancing, and singing into immersive ritualized theatrical creations. Born on Jeju Island, Korea, she trained at the master-level in music and dance styles rooted in Korean shamanism. She has become an award-winning traditional and contemporary arts performer, collaborating with Kronos Quartet, Anna Halprin, inkBoat, Degenerate Art Ensemble and many others. Dohee utilizes cutting-edge wearable wireless controller technology to seamlessly integrate acoustic and electronic sounds, video projections, dance, vocals and rhythm. She emphasizes the mythical, experimental, ritualistic, historical and healing aspects of performance and installation, catalyzing new relationships between identity, nature, spirituality, and the political. Dohee is Artistic Director of Dohee Lee Puri Arts; Director of Art and Healing with refugee rights collective, Asian Refugees United and is teaching staff at Tamalpa Institute.

Yozmit aka ¡°The DogStar¡±, is a Two-Spirit/Transgender singer-songwriter, performance artist, and designer. After starting her career as a fashion designer, Yozmit transformed herself into a performance artist after a heart-breaking experience attempting to break into K-Pop over their gender. After immigrating to California, Yozmit went on a spiritual artistic journey to find her voice as a trans-identified artist, curating her own Music/Fashion/Performance Art Campaign called *DoYou*. Contrary to the contemporary pop star who uses fame to sell products endorsed by corporations, The DogStar uses self-awareness and art practice as tools for liberation from inequality, bigotry, and marginalization around gender and identity. She hopes to inspire the queer community to seek liberation together.

¡°It¡¯s great to see this year¡¯s fellows working in a variety of mediums, such as performance, video, and film, and I¡¯m anticipating a very interesting and engaging set-up for their group exhibition¡± AHL Foundation President, Sook Nyu Lee Kim remarked. ¡°I would like to congratulate the recipients of this year¡¯s fellowship and also thank the artists who showed such interest in our award, grant, and fellowship opportunities.¡± The fellows will receive their monetary award and a certificate at the AHL Foundation¡¯s Annual Benefit Gala & Awards Ceremony on December 4th, 2021.
