"국정조사와 특검으로 성역(聖域) 없는 진상 규명을 실행하라!"
미주 한인여성들 1962명이 10.29참사에 대한 진상규명을 요구하는 시국선언문을 발표했다.
지난 6일 미씨 한인여성들의 포털인 미씨유에스에이(MissyUSA)를 시작으로 '이태원 참사 진상규명 미주위원회' 미주동포들, 세월호참사를 잊지 않는 전세계 풀뿌리 네트워크 '4.16해외연대', '재외동포'들이 13일 10.29참사에 대한 성명서 및 시국선언문을 발표하며, 성역 없는 진상 규명을 위한 국정조사와 특검을 요구했다.
선언문은 "힘든 이민생활동안 소중히 키운 아이를 조국에 어학연수 보내며 그 어머니는 얼마나 자랑스럽고 뿌듯하셨을까? 열심히 모은 돈으로 동경하던 한국에 온 그 학생은 얼마나 행복했을까? 하지만 한국정부는 그 분들을 지켜주지 못했고, 우리는 가슴이 찢어지는 고통을 느꼈다"고 말했다.
선언문은 "국민 안전은 국가의 무한 책임이라면서, 그날 왜 경찰이 파견될 수 없었는지 그 이유를 밝혀줄 것"을 요구하고 진상규명을 통해 책임자가 발견될 시, 대통령 포함 엄중한 처벌을 받고 공직에서 물러나길 요청했다.
158명의 참사 희생자는 있는데, 책임자는 없다며 분노한 미주 한인여성들은 한국의 주말 집회 주최측인 촛불행동에 응원의 메시지를 보내고, 영문 선언문을 외신에 제보하는 등 마음을 모으고 있다.
13일, 미주 한인여성 1962명의 서명자 명단을 보내온 제이(라스베가스 거주)씨는 "참사에 분노하며 쓴 글에 많은 분들이 공감해주었다"고 밝혔다. 초등학생 자녀를 키우며 회계 감사일을 하는 그녀는 "일주일 동안 서명을 모았다. 유가족들에 도움이 되었으면 좋겠다"고 말했다.

We are a group of Korean women living abroad, mostly in America. We are heartbroken over the tragedy that took place in Itaewon on October 29. The crowd crush killed 157 people - mostly in their teens and 20s - many of whom were local students and other students visiting from overseas.
We are mothers and are devastated by the news. We read stories of the victims who travelled to Korea to learn our language and our culture simply because they loved Korea. We read about victims who visited their motherland who were proud of their Korean heritage. However, they lost their lives in Korea and we still do not know why there were insufficient controls in place to protect this vulnerable group of young people that night.
South Korean authorities claim that they had no guidelines to handle such large crowds, which is difficult to believe because the Itaewon Halloween festivities are an annual tradition that have regularly attracted similar sized crowds in the past, all without incident or disaster. Why was this year so different? Why were the police unable to reach the crowd this time?
The government established a national “condolence” week which ended November 5. Even so, we are left with many unanswered questions. For example, why have the names of the victims we are to grieve not yet been released? It is very unusual in Korea to mourn without the names of the victims.
We also do not know what kind of support the government is providing to the injured and to the families of the victims. This situation requires transparency.
It is a government’s responsibility to keep its people safe. We demand justice and proper and thorough investigation. We also demand that the parties responsible for this needless tragedy be held accountable for their actions, all the way to the Presidency.
