Professor Hong Chang-ho from Hanseo University, Solo Exhibition at Queens College (CUNY) Klapper Hall Gallery - Invitational Exhibition
A solo exhibition by Professor Hong Chang-ho, a contemporary Korean artist and scholar known for his works that capture a fascinating emotional world based on his rich international sensibility, will be held at the Klapper Hall Gallery, Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY) from July 25 to August 2.
This exhibition, titled <Voyage 2024> - Floating Scars, features about 20 flat paintings and recent installation-type works based on the artist's 162-day stay in New York as a visiting scholar.
Professor Hong aims to reveal the unique worlds of each subject he encounters by visually representing new experiences faced through unfamiliar perspectives during 'travel'. Following his work method that emphasizes travel experiences, this exhibition also includes pieces that reconstruct actual street scenes and objects he encountered while walking to and from his accommodation, which is an hour away from Queens College.
For the artist, the artistic meaning derived from such travel experiences stems from an interesting interest in the foreigner's perspective encountered in another time and place in a constantly new world, as reflected in the exhibition title <Voyage>. His unique interpretation of time and space that make up the world shows an open, unfixed view of the world, as he says it's found in feeling oneself melted into the world. His gaze, which starts from affection for objects, carries a love for the world that operates regardless of the traditional aesthetic sense found only in sensual beauty.
"In discarded objects on the streets, I feel like I'm facing the wrinkles of aging human faces. Those wrinkles are not ugly, but the true beauty of objects revealed as wise, pure objects themselves. Just as each sorrow that forms wrinkles on a person's face is noble and sublime beauty..." – Hong Chang-ho, 2024
The artist, who received his master's degree from Pratt Institute and a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Hongik University in Korea, has won several prestigious awards worldwide and gained fame through exhibitions. His solo exhibitions and participations in international biennales from New York to Kassel, Germany, are characterized by uniqueness that unfolds his distinctive world reflecting his personal intimate emotions.
As a professor at Hanseo University in Korea and a former visiting professor at Brown University in the USA, the artist shows the fusion of his academic system with his own artistic language. His recent unique works using print media to replicate images are expected to continue expanding the formative and conceptual meaning in the context of contemporary art.
The exhibition opening is on Thursday, July 25, from 4pm to 7pm, and the exhibition will run until Friday, August 2, at the Klapper Hall Gallery.
