‘웜비어 비판’ 美교수 사임 압력

“부유하고 멍청한 백인남자 웜비어는 당해도 싸다.(Rich, White, Clueless, Male" Warmbier "Got Exactly What He Deserved)”

 

미국 대학의 여교수가 최근 북한에서 풀려난지 엿새만에 숨진 대학생 오토 웜비어에 대해 “당해도 싼 짓을 했다”며 신랄한 비판을 가해 논란이 일고 있다.

 

델라웨어 대학의 인류학자 캐시 디트와일러(62) 교수는 웜비어 사망 다음날인 21일 페이스북에 “웜비어는 부유하고 멍청한 백인남성의 전형이다. 당해도 싸다”고 비판했다. 웜비어에 대한 미국 사회의 추모 열기가 뜨거운 가운데 미국 학자의 부정적 반응이 더 큰 논란을 빚고 있는 것이다.

 

일부에서 “교수직에서 당장 물러나라”며 사퇴 압력을 넣고 있지만 디트와일러 교수는 25일 다시 페이스북을 통해 “웜비어가 당해도 싸다는 내 생각이 정말 틀렸나?”라고 의문을 제기했다.

 

그는 “재판정에서 울던 웜비어는 폭압(暴壓) 정권 아래에 놓여있는 북한의 모든 사람에 대해서 잠깐이라도 생각해봤을까. 그들이 미국 시민권자가 아닌 북한 사람들이기 때문에 상관없다는 것인가"라고 지적했다.

 

웜비어는 2015년 12월말 중국여행을 갔다가 5일간의 북한여행을 한 것으로 알려졌다. 그는 돌아오기 전날 밤 호텔 복도에 걸린 정치선전플래카드를 떼내는 모습이 CC-TV에 촬영돼 반공화국 적대행위 혐의로 15년 노동교화형을 선고받았다.

 

웜비어는 북미간의 교섭으로 18개월만인 지난 20일 풀려났으나 혼수상태(昏睡狀態)에 빠진 모습으로 귀국해 충격을 주었다. 웜비어가 고문과 구타로 숨졌다는 미국의 비난에 북한은 “웜비어가 보툴리누스 중독증(식중독)에 걸린 후 수면제를 복용하고 의식을 잃었다”며 “최대 피해자는 우리들이다. 왜 그가 귀국 일주일만에 숨졌는지 알 수 없다”며 강력 반발했다.

Dr. Katherine A. Dettwyler is an adjunct anthropology lecturer at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. She is also a lecturer, author and breastfeeding advocate.

 

Dr. Dettwyler is best known for her work studying the duration of breastfeeding in humans as it relates to other mammals, primarily the nonhuman primates. According to her research, the natural age of weaning is 2½ to 7 years old as determined by weight gain, length of gestation, dental eruption, and other factors. She also studies the cultural context of breasts and breastfeeding in the United States, and is currently doing research on women in the US who nurse their children longer than three years.

 

She attracted attention and controversy when she commented on her personal Facebook page and in the comments section of a National Review article that Otto Warmbier got "what he deserved" by his death related to taking down a poster in North Korea. Her grounds were that Warmbier was “typical of a mindset of a lot of the young, white, rich, clueless males who come into my classes, adding, “These are the same kids who cry about their grades because they didn’t think they’d really have to read and study the material to get a good grade,” Dettwyler wrote. “His parents ultimately are to blame for his growing up thinking he could get away with whatever he wanted. Maybe in the US, where young, white, rich, clueless white males routinely get away with raping women. Not so much in North Korea."
