"제 이름은 남(Nam)이에요. 1975년 발견됐어요. 태어난지 몇주 안됐는데..낳아주신 부모님과 가족을 찾고 있어요. 35년전 일인데 기억(記憶)나는거 없으세요?"
다큐영화 '화운드 인 코리아(Found In Korea)'를 소개하는 짧은 동영상은 이렇게 시작된다.뉴욕에서 활동하는 입양아(入養兒) 출신 한인 뮤지컬배우가 입양아 문제를 환기시키기 위한 인터넷 기금 모금 캠페인을 벌여 관심을 끌고 있다.
주인공은 메긴 남 홀츠(40 Meggin Nam Holtz). 그녀는 1975년 9월 경남 남해에서 생후 3주로 추정되는 갓난아기로 발견됐다. 이후 한 가정에 위탁돼 부산과 서울에서 잠시 머물다 이듬해 2월 미국에 입양됐다. ‘남해옥(Nam Hae Ok)’이라는 영문 이름과 함께 촬영된 사진 한 장을 남긴 채.
시카고 교외에서 양부모 제인과 스티브 홀츠, 이들이 낳은 남매 두명과 한국서 역시 입양된 남동생과 함께 살았다. 무용가이자 작가, 배우인 그녀는 현재 뉴욕에 거주하며 브로드웨이와 런던, 라스베가스의 뮤지컬 극장에서 활약하고 있다.
메긴 남 홀츠가 인터넷모금사이트인 인디고고에서 진행하는 캠페인은 '화운드 인 코리아(Found in Korea)'다. '화운드 인 코리아'는 그녀가 부모와 가족을 찾기 위해 한국에 가서 뿌리를 찾는 과정을 그린 다큐 영화의 타이틀이기도 하다.
영화를 기획한 것은 5년전으로 거슬러 올라간다. 성장하며 부모와 가족에 대한 그리움에 그녀는 미국인 입양아 친구와 함께 한국을 방문, 21일간 남해와 부산 서울 등지를 다니며 뿌리 찾기에 나섰다. 입양기관을 방문하고 35년전 잠시 자신을 맡았던 가정을 수소문했지만 특별한 성과를 얻지는 못했다.
대부분의 입양아들은 어떤 낯선 곳에서 '발견(Found)'으로 기구한 '여정(Journey)'이 시작된다. 인디고고사이트엔 '화운드 인 코리아'를 소개하는 2분50초의 동영상이 나온다.
그녀는 동영상에서 "이 필름은 나 자신의 뿌리를 찾는 과정이자 모든 입양아들의 문제를 공유하는 내용이기도 하다"며 "미국을 비롯해 해외로 입양된 한인입양아들은 20만명이 넘는다. 입양인들이 어떤 삶을 살고 있는지 어떤 어려움을 겪고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다"고 말한다.
지난 5년간 그녀는 가장 많은 한인 입양인들이 사는 것으로 알려진 미니애폴리스를 비롯한 여러 도시를 찾아다니며 자신과 같은 입양아들을 만나 인터뷰하는 등 자료를 모았다. 편집과 녹음, 색보정, 음악 등 영화를 완성하기 위해 드는 총 비용은 5만8975달러다. 가난한 예술가로선 턱없이 많은 비용이었다.
고심 끝에 인디고고를 통해 모금 캠페인(https://igg.me/at/foundinkorea)에 나선 이유다. 기부는 10달러, 25달러, 50달러 등 다양하게 할 수 있으며 액수에 따라 소정의 답례(答禮)를 받는다. 마감을 한달 남겨둔 적립액은 30일 현재 목표의 8%인 4,634달러에 머물고 있다.
메긴 남 홀츠는 "지난 5년간 한국에서 나의 흔적을 더듬고 또 미국에서 다른 입양인들을 만나면서 더 이상 이 영화가 나의 개인적인 이야기가 아니라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다"며 많은 이들의 따뜻한 관심을 당부했다.
그녀는 "입양문화에 대한 많은 이슈들과 문제들을 논의해야 할 때라고 생각한다. 영화가 완성되면 학교에서 인종을 초월한 입양문제를 연구하고 싶다"고 또다른 소망을 펼쳤다.

I am a Korean adoptee living in NYC.
•"Found in Korea" is a film about adoption, searching for one's roots and culture, and family.
The main reasons I am making this film are:
1) to open up the conversation on adoption and foster care (dispel stigmas, engage youth and adults)
2) to create media where transracial families and lives are featured in a realistic manner, and
3) to educate about adoption and foster care.
•Over the past 5 years I have become more aware and involved in the adoption community. I see many issues and struggles that need to be addressed, and I realize that my work has just begun.
"Found in Korea" will be an important catalyst for many people who do not have access to discussions about adoption. My hope is that conversations started by this film will help to educate and heal a large group of people.

Here is a Transparent breakdown of how the funds will be utilized:• Editing: My editor is the witty and talented Allison Lane (Reel Spiel Productions). She has generously agreed to work on this project at 1/2 her going rate. Projected editing costs: $9,000-$10,000
• Sound editing: This is such an important part of documentary film making. The more care and budget I can put into the sound, the better the sound quality will be. Projected sound editing budget: $5,000-$9,000
• Color Correction: I want my film to look it's best. Again, the more I can budget for this area, the better the quality. Projected color correction budget: $3,000-$6,500
• Music & Composer and Fees: The music is incredibly important to any film. We are hiring an amazing composer for this film! Projected Music budget: $8,000-$20,000
• Deliverables: What are "Deliverables?" They are all the things we need to "Deliver" upon a distribution deal (which hopefully we will get with NETFLIX!!): These include: E&O Insurance Policy, Legal Fees, Licenses, Agreements, Copyrights, Digi-Beta Masters for television and video, Photographic Material, and a Standard Press Kit, to name a few! Projected Deliverables budget: $25,000-$40,000
