한인여고생 美경찰국장 등 사법인들에 감사편지 100통 전달 화제

 

뉴욕의 한인여고생이 경찰국장 등 미국의 사법인들에게 (感謝) 편지 100장을 전달해 화제가 되고 있다.

 

롱아일랜드 제리코 하이스쿨의 신혜전(12학년) 양은 5일 뉴저지 버겐카운티 마이크 소디노 쉐리프 국장에게 학우들과 함께 준비한 100장의 감사 편지를 전달하는 시간을 가졌다.

 

'더나은 사회를 위한 약속(Promissing a Better Society)'이라는 단체 회장으로 있는 신혜전양은 해마다 커뮤니티를 위해 헌신하는 경찰과 쉐리프 요원 등 사법인들에게 감사의 뜻을 전하는 프로젝트를 전개해 왔다.

 

뉴욕의 학생들이 뉴저지의 쉐리프 국장에게 특별한 감사를 표하게 된 것은 사연이 있다. 소디노 국장이 불우 청소년들을 돕는 등 10대 학생들을 위한 후원활동을 누구보다 열심히 하기 때문이다. 특히 그는 '친한파 경찰국장'으로 한인사회와는 돈독한 유대관계를 보이고 있다.

 

이날 자리를 주선한 주성배 자문관에 따르면 소디노 국장은 재임 5년간 한국의 소년소녀가장들과 고어헤드선교회 청소년들과 충북대학생들의 미국방문을 돕고 경찰서에 초청해 체험교육의 기회도 제공하는 등 많은 배려(感謝)를 아끼지 않았다.

 

또한 주성배 자문관이 진행하는 한인청소년 리더십 프로그램도 후원하는 등 그간 거쳐간 학생들이 200여명에 달하고 있다. 오는 8일에도 고허헤드 선교회 아이들과 소년소녀가장 등 10명이 방문할 예정이다.

 

쉐리프국은 카운티 최고의 사법기관으로 법원, 교도소, 보안업무등과 경찰의 임무를 맡는 사법기구이다. 최근 카운티 경찰국을 쉐리프국에 통폐합 시켜 시민들의 세금 부담을 줄이는 등 큰 호응을 얻고 있다.

 

 

 

신혜전양은 "매년 더나은 세상만들기 단체에서 감사편지 쓰기 운동을 하고 있는데, 해마다 한국과 한인 청소년들을 초청해 리더십 교육을 통해 격려해 주는 마이크 소디노 쉐리프 국장님에게 100장의 감사 편지를 전달하게 되어 기쁘다"고 소감을 피력했다.

 

신양은 지난해 뉴저지에서 열린 동북아평화포럼 주강사로 나온 충남대 신 진 평화문제연구소장의 1남1녀중 둘째이다.

 

마이크 소디노 쉐리프국장은 "한인 사회와 함께 하는 것에 대해 자부심을 갖고 있다"고 말했다. 소디노 국장은 오는 19일부터 1주일간 한국을 방문할 예정이다.

 

생애 처음 한국을 찾게 됐다는 그는 "성동경찰서와 현대 자동차, 폴리스 아카데미 등을 방문하는 기회를 통해 한국 문화와 정서를 이해하고 소통하게 되어 흥분된 맘을 감출 수 없다"고 활짝 웃었다.

Sheriff Michael Saudino

 

Sheriff Michael Saudino is a 53 year resident of Bergen County and has been a veteran of law enforcement for over 41​ years. Pri​or to becoming Sheriff in 2011, he spent nine years as Chief of Police in​ the Borough of Emerson. Under his watch, Emerson has stayed a safe and prosperous town to live and work in. Sheriff Saudino has always made it a priority to be responsible with public money – he has done so by keeping his operating budgets low while still providing the highest levels of service to the community.​

 

Sheriff Saudino has al​ways believed in a responsibility to serve. He is a member of the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club – a service organization made up of veterans and police officers. Sheriff Saudino is a 20-year member of the Emerson Volunteer Fire Department, where he formerly served as President. Sheriff Saudino is a 3rd-Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Throughout 2010, Sheriff Saudino served as President of the Bergen County Police Chiefs Association, where he was known to be a champion of increased communication between Bergen County’s police departments.

 

 

Since taking office, Sheriff Saudino has been credited with numerous initiatives undertaken by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office. In 2011, continuing his message of increased communication with local law enforcement agencies, the BCSO held the first-ever countywide Chief for a Day celebration. The celebration is designed to brighten the lives of local children with chronic health conditions. The inspirational program provides children and their families with a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of law enforcement.

 

That same year, Sheriff Saudino, along with a host of state and local law enforcement officials announced their support for the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers, a non-profit organization that promotes the use of non-drinking designated drivers to prevent drunken driving tragedies nationwide. The ceremony was held in Hackensack at the Bergen County Justice to mark better awareness for the program in northern New Jersey.

 

In April of 2013, the Sheriff’s Office, along with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s held a countywide gun buyback program, where residents who wished to do so would voluntarily give back any unwanted or non-operational weapons. The program netted a total of 1,345 firearms over two days. The amount is more than twice what was collected in 2010, the last time a buyback was held.

 

The Sheriff has also been recognized for his effective management and leadership in office. More than 11,000 hours of Overtime have been eliminated over the last two years, and historic cuts to the budget have been realized in real dollars, all while never compromising public safety. In July of 2013, the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders unanimously awarded Sheriff Saudino with the Bergen County Taxpayer Advocate Award. More recently in October, the State Troopers Coalition honored Sheriff Saudino with the Man of the Year Award for his outstanding public service and accomplishments in office.

 

First elected in November of 2010, Sheriff Saudino was recently reelected to serve a second term in November of 2013.

 

He resides in Emerson with his wife, Gina. His son, Michael Jr., is a Sergeant with the Borough of Haworth Police Department in Bergen County.
