반총장, CBS ‘레이트쇼’ 콜베어 웃겼다

"카다피 연설 통역하다가 기절했다니까요."

진지함과 유머가 교차(交叉)하는 한판 '위트 배틀'이었다. 반기문 총장이 코미디언겸 인기 토크쇼진행자 스티븐 콜베어를 웃겼다.

반총장은 17일 방송된 콜베어가 진행하는 CBS-TV '레이트쇼'에 출연, 재치있는 응답으로 사회자와 관객들의 폭소(爆笑)를 자아냈다. 콜베어는 지난 5월 은퇴를 선언한 데이비드 레터맨에 이어 레이트쇼를 이끌고 있다. 반총장이 미국의 공중파 TV 토크쇼에 출연한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

콜베어가 초대손님으로 반총장을 소개하자 스튜디오는 뜨거운 박수와 환호가 이어졌다. "팬들이 많다"며 반총장을 추켜 세운 콜베어는 "유엔 총회장과 스튜디오가 어떻게 다르냐?"고 첫 질문을 던졌다.

반총장은 "이곳은 환상적이다. 그에 비하면 내 방은 정말 초라하다. 교황 의자처럼 겸손하다"면서 청중들을 웃겼다. 이어 "교황도 오는데 의자좀 빌려줄 수 있냐?"고 능청스런 유머로 폭소를 이어나갔다.

콜베어도 지지 않았다. "70차 유엔총회가 개막했다. Traffic(교통체증)에 감사한다"며 유엔총회 개막으로 교통지옥으로 변한 상황을 비트는 유머를 발휘했다.

콜베어는 인권문제와 최근 세계인들의 가슴을 울린 시리아난민 꼬마의 비극을 언급하며 "지난 일년간 발생한 난민이 1600만명으로 역대 최대라고 한다. 유엔은 이 문제들을 어떻게 강제적이고 효율적으로 대처하고 있냐?"며 잠시 진지한 대화를 주고받았다. 그러더니 곧이어 돌직구를 날렸다.

'당신은 한국출신이다. 한국이 가장 중요한 나라냐?"는 기습질문에 반총장은 "물론 난 한국을 사랑한다"며 "1950년 한국전쟁으로 잿더미가 된 과거를 소개하며 "나도 여섯 살 때 피난을 갔다. 그때 유엔이 와서 교과서도 주고 음식과 옷을 공급해주었다"며 한국의 재건에 유엔이 결정적인 역할을 한 사실을 들려주었다.

"당신은 세계 모든 사람들의 외교관인데 가끔 미치광이 지도자도 만나지 않냐? 그런 사람들을 어떻게 다루냐?"는 난처한 질문에 반총장은 "난 여러분에게 말할 수 없는 비밀들이 참 많다. 내가 은퇴하면 얘기해주겠다"고 짐짓 말을 아꼈다.

그러자 콜베어는 비장의 무기(?)를 꺼냈다. 핑크빛 칵테일이었다. 파안대소하며 건배를 한 반총장은 "알콜의 힘을 빌어 한가지만 말해주겠다. 전 리비아지도자 카다피는 유엔에 오면 엄청나게 긴 연설을 한다. 보통 정상들이 15분 연설하는데 그는 몇시간이다. 한번은 아랍어통역을 하던 유엔 통역자가 '도저히 계속할 수 없다. 좀 도와달라'고 하더니 그만 기절했다"고 농섞인 비화를 들려주었다.

계속 건배하며 "또 얘기해달라"는 콜베어의 애교에 반총장은 눈웃음으로 화답(和答)했다. 출연해준 반총장에게 감사를 표한 콜베어는 시청자들에게 유엔 중앙긴급구호기금(CERF)에 기부를 부탁하며 토크쇼를 마무리했다.

Stephen Tyrone Colbert

Stephen Tyrone Colbert (born May 13, 1964) is an American comedian, writer, producer, actor, singer, media critic, and television host. He currently hosts the late-night television talk show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS.

Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the sketch comedy series Exit 57.

Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. His work as a correspondent on Comedy Central's news-parody series The Daily Show first introduced him to a wide audience.

In 2005, he left The Daily Show to host a spin-off series, The Colbert Report. Following The Daily Show‍ 's news-parody concept, The Colbert Report was a parody of personality-driven political opinion shows such as The O'Reilly Factor, in which Colbert portrayed a caricatured version of conservative political pundits. The series established itself as one of Comedy Central's highest-rated series, earning Colbert an invitation to perform as featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in 2006. Colbert has won nine Primetime Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and two Peabody Awards. He was named one of Time‍ 's 100 most influential people in 2006 and 2012. His book I Am America (And So Can You!) was number one on The New York Times Best Seller list.

On April 10, 2014, CBS announced that Colbert had been chosen to succeed David Letterman as the host of The Late Show on CBS after Letterman's retirement in May 2015. The show premiered on September 8, 2015.
