세계 최고의 마술사 데이비드 카퍼필드가 뉴욕에 '관광버스'를 타고 깜짝 등장했다.
최근 맨해튼 피어37에서 열린 '라이드오브페임(The Ride of Fame)'의 주인공 데이비드 카퍼필드가 한국에 대한 특별한 애정을 보여 눈길을 끌었다.
라이드오브페임은 지난 2010년 뉴욕시티투어 '그레이라인' 100주년을 맞아 시작된 '라이드오브페임' 연례 이벤트로 유명인사가 홍보대사로 나와 버스여행을 권장(勸奬)하고 팬들과 교감(校監)하는 자리다.
자유의 여신상을 사라지게 하고 만리장성과 나이아가라 폭포를 통과하는 엄청난 스케일의 마술로 잘 알려진 카퍼필드는 한국에서도 공연을 통해 많은 팬들을 보유하고 있다.
CBS-TV에서 인기리에 방송된 '데이비드 카퍼필드의 마술'은 경이로움 그 자체였다. 한국의 재능있는 젊은이들에게 마술사의 꿈을 꾸게 한 그는 세월을 거스르는듯한 모습이었다. 밀랍인형같은 얼굴과 군살없는 몸매가 이순(耳順)이 가까운 나이라는 사실이 전혀 믿기지 않을 정도였다.
카퍼필드는 '글로벌웹진' 뉴스로(www.newsroh.com)와의 인터뷰에서 나이를 하나도 먹지 않은 것 같다는 얘기에 "그게 내가 가장 잘 하는 트릭"이라며 재치있는 화술을 선보였다.
이날 행사가 전날 비로 인해 하루 순연(順延)된 것과 관련, 라이드오브페임 창설자 데이비드 첸(David W. Chien)도 "사실 어제 카퍼필드가 비를 막으려 했는데 그게 잘 안됐다. 하지만 오늘은 성공했다"고 말해 웃음을 자아냈다.
행사에 참석한 연극배우 겸 큐레이터 이오비씨가 한국 출신이라는 얘기에 카퍼필드는 "한국에는 지난해에도 다녀왔다. 한국음식을 정말 좋아한다"고 친근감을 보였다.
그는 "그동안 한국에서 여러번 공연을 했는데 한번은 이건희 삼성회장의 초청으로 방문하기도 했다"면서 "한국은 언제나 열정적인 팬들이 반겨주기때문에 항상 가고싶은 곳"이라고 말했다.
이오비씨가 "어렸을 때 기억의 당신은 여기저기 공간이동을 하고 무엇이든 사라지게 하는 사람이었다"고 하자, "다 옛날 일"이라면 부드러운 미소를 지었다.
열두살에 마술을 시작한 그는 천부적인 재능으로 열네살 때 미국마술사협회에 최연소 회원으로 등록된 기록을 갖고 있다. 영화배우 뺨치는 잘 생긴 외모(外貌)로 일찌감치 스타가 되었다.
카퍼필드는 뉴요커이기도 하다. 허드슨강 너머 뉴저지 메튜첸 출신으로 어린 시절 버스를 타고 맨해튼에 넘어와 연기를 배우고 다시 업타운까지 버스를 타고 가서 보컬 등 음악연습을 하며 미래를 꿈꾸었다고 한다.
그런만큼 버스에 대한 아련한 추억을 간직하고 있었다. 그는 버스는 희망과 꿈을 운반해주는 것이기도 하다. 나의 젊은 시절처럼 이 버스를 타는 많은 학생과 젊은이들이 꿈을 키우면 좋겠다"고 말했다.
그동안 '라이드오브페임'의 홍보대사로는 스타셰프 겸 엔터테이너 레이첼 레이와 세계적인 디자이너 케네스 콜이 거쳐갔다. 뉴욕시의 다양한 관광코스를 제공해온 그레이라인은 내년부터 라이드오브페임을 통해 타주와도 연계(連繫)한 행사들을 진행할 계획이다.
이오비씨는 "더블데커(2층 관광버스)는 맨해튼의 움직이는 상징물이고 많은 미국인들이 장거리 이용시 저렴한 버스를 많이 이용한다"면서 "카퍼필드같은 유명인사와 함께 버스에 얽힌 꿈과 추억을 얘기하는 마케팅이 참 인상적이다. 우리나라도 참고하면 좋을 것 같다"고 말했다.

The Ride of Fame™ is a continuing series of mobile monuments dedicated to celebrated personalities making large impact to their fans with specific ties to New York City, as well as such celebrities preserving a time capsule commemorating their moment in time with their fans in New York City. ROF commemorates a moment in New York City’s date and time in reference to each celebrity’s respective “I” recognition, whether he/she is an “Immortal”, “IT” or “imminent” honoree. Chosen honorees are recommended by an internal algorithm comprised of prospective honoree’s industry specific awards, social media channels presence, fans’ votes, and other related quantifiable entities.
Each IT and Immortal honoree receives a customized artwork in person at a press and public attended red carpet, ribbon cutting ceremony. These customized artwork is comprised of the honorees most recognized and celebrated endeavors. The artwork is applied to the front of a double-decker bus, as well as a seat with his/her personal message scribed at the induction ceremony. Both front tribute decal and seat are permanently applied to one bus, which serves as a lifetime pass for the honoree and his family.
Each imminent honoree receives a permanent seat on the imminent double-decker bus. They will have the opportunity to pen their personal message on their seat. More than one imminent artist will be present on this bus.
