영국의 BBC 방송이 세월호 쌍둥이배인 오하마나호의 현장검증(現場檢證)을 보도했다고 외신전문사이트 ‘뉴스프로’가 전했다.
BBC는 지난달 30일 한국 특파원발 보도에서 “세월호 선장 및 선원들에 대한 재판이 일주일 휴정한다. 이는 세월호의 쌍둥이배인 오하마나호를 통해 현장검증을 하기 때문”이라고 보도했다.
BBC 스튜디오에서 인천 항구에 나온 특파원과 직접 연결한 이 보도는 현장검증이 세월호에서 무슨 일이 일어났던 것일까에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 실시했다며 재판의 주요 핵심이 되고 있는 승무원들의 이동 소요시간, 안내방송 등의 절차를 살펴보는 것이라고 설명했다.
루시 윌리엄스 특파원은 ‘한국에서 지속적인 관심을 받고 있는 이 사건의 학생들과 생존자들의 이야기를 언제나 들을 수 있겠느냐’는 스튜디오의 질문에 “다음 몇 주 동안 일부 생존자들과 선원들로부터 선내에서 일어난 것들에 대해 그들이 기억하는 일들에 대해 증언을 듣기 시작할 것으로 보인다”고 전했다.
윌리엄스 특파원은 이어 “현장검증에는 판사들과 검사들뿐만 아니라 몇몇의 피고인들과 일부 희생자들의 가족들도 참석하는 것으로 알고 있다. 그들은 일종의 재연(再演)을 통해 그날 어떤 일들이 일어날 수 있었는지 정확하게 알아내고자 할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

The trial of the captain and crew members of the South Korean ferry that sank claiming more than 300 lives is taking a one-week break.

An initial investigation showed that a sharp turn, overloading, improper stowage and excessive re-modelling of the ship were likely the main causes of the accident.
Lucy Williamson reports from the port of Incheon in South Korea.

Lucy: Well, this port is of course the harbour from where Sewol ferry set sail two months ago and today as you see the court is coming back here to inspect a sister ship. It’s going to give some idea of what might have happened onboard. This is the trial of crew members onboard the Sewol. So, what they are trying to do onboard the sister ship is to look at how much time would have taken for crew members to get between one part of the ship to the other, the procedures for making radio announcements. Some of the things that are really at the heart of this trial.

Studio: And, Lucy, as well we know that is what’s happening today, the trial is on break. But of course this is a story that continues to be followed in South Korea – a huge outpouring of grief, anger as well. So, when can we expect to hear from some of those students and survivors from this episode?

Lucy: That’s likely to happen in the next few weeks. There is a timetable that’s unfolding here in the trial. First of all, some video evidence last week from the ship that’s being inspected today actually, which took the court through some of the procedures that would be normal onboard the ferry of this kind. Now they come here to see for themselves exactly what it would have been like onboard. As we understand it there are going to be not only judges and prosecutors present on the ship today, but also some of the defendants and and some victims’ families as well. And they are going to be perhaps, we are told, doing some kind of reenactments, certainly having a good look at exactly what would have been involved that day. And then moving forward for the next few weeks we should start to hear from some of those survivors and some of those crew members who survived about what they remember as happening onboard.
