South Korean military to replace made-in-China national flags
Çѱ¹±º, Áß±¹»ê ±¹±â ±³Ã¼
The South Korean military will replace national flags made in China with those made by local companies from June 6 or South Korean Memorial Day, a national holiday to honor the soldiers and civilians who gave their lives for their country during the Korean War (1950-1953), reports Huanqiu, the website of China¡¯s nationalistic tabloid Global Times.

A senior defense official said on June 3 that the ROK Armed Forces became aware in late May that the national flags purchased through governmental procurement were made in China. Figures showed that South Korea purchased around 9,000 Chinese-made national flags in 2013 and 15,000 this year, the report said.

Well over 1 million Chinese troops fought on the side of North Korea against the South and mostly American troops fighting under a UN mandate. It is therefore something of an irony that the South Korean military¡¯s national flags should be produced in China.

Although there is no law prohibiting the use of flags made overseas, the decision has been made to replace them.

A South Korean flag made in China is estimated to cost around US$13, Huanqiu said, while it is significantly more expensive to manufacture them domestically — as much as US$124. It is estimated the ROK Armed Forces will have to spend US$12.6 million to replace all of the flags.

Following news of the move, internet users in the country have gone online to say that the new purchases are unnecessary. However, the South Korean government and the ROK Armed Forces have stated that the military is determined to use the South Korean-made flags and the process to replace them is already underway.
