“신라전을 계기로 한국예술은 아시아예술의 중심으로 맞춰질 것입니다.”
뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄의 수장에게도 신라특별전은 단순한 한국예술품 전시회가 아닌듯 했다. 10월 29일 개막돼 내년 2월 23일까지 계속되는 ‘신라: 코리아의 황금왕국(Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom)’은 올 가을 메트뮤지엄이 준비하는 15개의 전시회중에서도 가장 기대할만한 야심작이다.
세계4대 뮤지엄이자 서반구 최대의 박물관이라는 수식어가 붙는 메트뮤지엄이지만 중국, 일본관에 비해 한국관은 규모와 내용면에서 너무나 왜소하다. 그런 메트뮤지엄에 무려 100점이 넘는 신라의 보물들이 3개월가까이 전시되는 것은 예사 일이 아니다.
메트뮤지엄의 토마스 캠벨(51 Thomas P. Campbell) 관장 겸 CEO는 무려 5년의 준비 끝에 성사된 이번 ‘신라 특별전’에 대한 특별한 기대감을 숨기지 않았다.
캠벨 관장은 싱가포르에서 태어나 영국 캠브리지에서 성장했다. 옥스포트 뉴칼리지에서 영문학을 전공하고 코타울드 예술대학에서 석사, 런던대에서 박사학위를 받았다. 태피스트리 전문가인 그는 메트뮤지엄에서 14년간 큐레이터로 활약하며 능력을 인정받아 지난 2008년 9월 제9대 관장 겸 CEO로 취임했다.
다음은 캠벨 관장과의 일문일답.
-이번 신라 특별전은 어떤 의미를 갖고 있나
“신라유물전은 서구의 뮤지엄들이라면 누구나 해보고싶은 전시회가 아닐 수 없다. 우리는 이 신라전을 위해 5년을 준비해 왔다. 적절한 시기에 열리는 이 전시를 통해 한국의 예술이 모든 아시아 예술의 중심에 맞춰지기를 기대한다.”
-신라전을 위해 경주를 방문했다고 들었다.
“두번의 경주 방문을 통해 모든 예술의 기본을 이루는 건물들이나 풍경 등을 잘 이해할 수 있었다. 경주 방문은 예술작업의 소통과 이해를 돕는 나의 직업에 깊은 감사를 느끼게 해주는 소중한 경험이었다.”
-경주에서 인상깊은 곳이 있었다면
“석굴암을 관람시간 이후에 방문하게 되었는데 마침 둥근달이 밝게 비추는 가운데 들어서게 됐다. 뭐랄까, 언뜻 시간을 거슬러 먼 과거로 돌아가 어느 커다란 탑 앞에 서있는듯한 착각을 일으킨 순간이었다. 매우 감동적이었다.”
-이번 전시회를 통해 어떤 점을 기대하나
“전시기간동안 예술에 대한 조예와 상관없이 모든 관람객이 신라의 문화와 역사에 대한 견문이 넓혀지리라 기대한다. 이번 전시가 비단 뉴욕뿐만이 아니라 세계의 모든 관람객들에게 신라를 알리는 하나의 깃점이 되기를 바란다.”
-기존의 한국관을 활용하지 않은 이유가 있는지
“신라 유물들은 대단히 중요하기 때문에 메트뮤지엄에서 공간이 넓고 특별한 전시관에서 개최되어야 한다고 생각한다.(신라특별전은 메트 뮤지엄의 중심인 그리스 유물관에서 이어지는 3개의 전시관에서 열린다.)
-신라와 동시대에 백제라는 훌륭한 왕국의 역사가 있다. 혹시 들어본적이 있는지, 언젠가 백제전을 기대해도 좋은지 궁금하다.
“한국 방문을 통해 백제 등 다른 왕조에 대해 들을 수 있었다. 다음 기회에 더욱 자세히 알 수 있는 기회가 있기를 바란다.”

Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Thomas P. Campbell, Ph.D. is the ninth director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere. After fourteen years as a curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, specializing in tapestries, he was elected Director and CEO on September 9, 2008.
Campbell has pursued an agenda for the Met that focuses on both scholarship and accessibility. These priorities maintain the museum's focus on exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and permanent collections, while encouraging new thinking about the visitor experience. Further initiatives have included exploring the judicious use of technology in the Museum and fully integrating education into all the Met's activities.
The Fiscal July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012 saw the Met's highest attendance in 40 years, rising to 6.28 million. During that year the Museum also opened extensive new galleries for both its Islamic and American art and launched a redesigned website that now attracts more than 44 million visits per year. The Museum is currently working on plans to renovate The Costume Institute and a project to redesign the Museum's Fifth Avenue plaza and fountains. Also on the horizon is a collaboration with the Whitney Museum in which the Met will program its landmark Breuer Building on Madison Avenue and 75th Street starting in 2015.
Born in Singapore and raised in Cambridge, England, where he attended The Perse School, Campbell received his B.A. in English language and literature at New College, Oxford in 1984, followed by a Diploma from Christie's Fine and Decorative Arts course, London, in 1985. While studying for his Master's degree at the Courtauld Institute of Art (1987), he discovered the extent to which mainstream art history had overlooked the major role that the tapestry medium played in European art and propaganda.
