Public Statement
The Japanese government forcibly mobilized approximately 2.5 million young and healthy Koreans from the Korean colony to Japan during the Asian-Pacific War (1931-1945). It assigned them to the hardest, dirtiest and the most dangerous labor. The Japanese government also forcibly mobilized approximately 200,000 Korean and other Asian girls to Japanese military brothels for sexual slavery during the Asian-Pacific War.
After surrendering to the Allied powers in 1945, Japan nullified the Japanese citizenships of the Koreans who survived the harsh labor and extreme hunger. Overnight, the conscripted laborers became stateless people stranded in Japan.
Although many Koreans had left Japan, 1.4 million Koreans remained there. To hold their national identity, they built Korean schools all over Japan to teach their language and history to their children. After Korea was liberated from Japan, foreign troops occupied both the North and the South, Koreas which led to the breakout of the Korean War in 1950.
Since then, some Koreans living in Japan have chosen to acquire South Korean or Japanese citizenship out of convenience. But many still refuse to choose between North and South Korea and remain stateless while waiting to return to a unified Korea. Currently, about 6,000 students of Korean descent study in 64 Korean schools in Japan.
In 2010, the Japanese government made all high school education free of charge, but excluded the Korean Schools--the schools for Korean compatriots--from this policy. Koreans in Japan pay taxes and fulfill all their obligations like other Japanese citizens, but their children are excluded from state aid and deprived of the right to education. In 2019, the Japanese government made all kindergartens and nurseries free, but it excluded Korean kindergartens and nurseries from the governmental financing. In many Korean schools, students study in sweltering heat without air conditioning, and many are unable to purchase computers for online classes, which have become essential in the COVID-19 pandemic.
What¡¯s more, the Japanese government provides $200 to college students who have fallen on hard times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but excludes students at Korea University from this benefit. This is clearly systemic racism and a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We, in the United States, oppose the Japanese racist policies and violation of human rights. We are here today to stand with our Korean compatriots in Japan.
