On Memorial Day

Before I start my story, I want to apology for what Korean military-the US machinery did in Vietnam. I am sorry for Terresa Mei Chuc. I served Korean Army at Camp Humphrey from 1967 to 1970.

Today I want to remember my families and other naïve fellow Koreans who perished in the Korean War. I was born in 1944 in One Korea even though under Japanese occupation.

Our family lived in a small farming town in the middle of what is currently South

Korea. Two uncles and a cousin were arrested a month after the War broke and killed. An uncle was an official in a town, another one was a policeman, and the cousin was mechanic. My father passed away of pneumonia 2 years prior to the war.

All married men in my family were gone and left behind young widowers and their 2 dozen siblings. My mother inherited a small plot of land barely enough to feed 6 children. There was no hope when all male adults were gone. The sky had fallen down.

With no time to sorrow the loss, the US air planes bombed my town and destroyed everything at random. I was 6 years old. I was hit by machine gun on my foot with my 3 and 9 years old two sisters. Our thatched roof caught fire. My mother found her 3 kids with blood all over in a still smoky room when putting down the fire with buckets of water.

My 9 year-old sister died of lead poisoning much later from the wound. A bullet was never removed from her thigh. Still I have to massage the broken tendon of my foot.

Another cousin, the 4th victim of my family were ran over by a speeding military truck while she was selling daily items in a corner of a narrow street. She was 12 years old.

Life was not our choice. We didn¡¯t know what would happen the next day.

We survived.

While I was in Korean Army, USS Pueblo was captured in January 1968 by North Korean Navy at Wonsan Harbor. A couple of US aircraft carrier moved close to North Korea to revenge any minute for the capture.

My unit was in full alert. Long and hard physical training and political class continued to increase adrenalin and hatred of North Koreans. We slept with combat boots on. Any minute we might have to move to the war front at the drop of order to kill our Korean brothers.

The captives of 82 sailors were released after the US apologized for the infiltration into North Korean water territory. Peace stayed not too long. On April 1969, a North Korean MIG shot down a US reconnaissance EC 121 with 31 crewmembers on board over North Korean water. All of them were killed. I was discharged from military in 1970.

In August 1945, Koreans were indulged in happiness of liberation from Japan thanks to the US. However the US divided Korea by 38th parallel and started injection of American democracy and capitalism into South Koreans. Opinion polls in 1946 shows South Koreans supported Socialism 70 %, American democracy 15% and Communism 10%.

The US Army imported McCarthyism over South Koreans to change their belief along with brutal capital punishment if they resisted.

I want to share 3 photos with you. These photos were found at the US National Archive.

As you see the US Army stood behind the Jeju massacre in 1948. They hired US citizen Syngman Rhee as chief. 40,000 naïve civilians including children, babies and women killed regardless. A quarter of the residence of Jeju killed as simply suspicious communists. The US Navy destroyer blockaded Jeju island and supplied ammunition to police and right wing gangsters during the massacre.

Koreans realized much later they were deceived and there were no liberation but the master changed from Japanese to the US. The US already had started the Korean War in Jeju 3 years earlier than the official record of the Korean War broke on June 25, 1950.

Today, I want to pay my deep homage to all the killed innocent people including my 2 uncles and 2 cousins. The US is responsible for the tragedy of the killings in Korea. Still tens of thousands of Koreans are anxious to meet their separated families in the other side of DMZ but the US is not permitting the meeting.

The US should close military bases in Korea and get out of Korea. This will bring peace and better life for all Koreans and all humanity beyond. It will save billions of dollars of our tax money. Let Koreans decide their fate by themselves.

Thank you for all.
