美정부 대북여행금지 철회되야

미국내 10만 이산가족 고통

안녕하십니까. 오늘은 좀 특별한 사안을 호소합니다.

미국에 2백만 정도 우리동포들이 살고 있습니다. 2017년 8월 당시 트럼프 대통령의 대북여행금지 이후 가족 만남은 물론 문화 체육을 포함한 모든 교류행사가 4년째 완전 봉쇄되고 있습니다. 바이든 정권에서도 마찬가지입니다.

얼마간 못본 손주를 보고 싶어서 사진을 꺼내들기도 하지요. 서울에 있는 형제 자매들의 목소리라도 듣고 싶어 전화를 자주합니다. 보고 싶은 사람 못보게 하는 것이 얼마나 큰 고통이며 인권위반인지를 우리는 잘 알고 있습니다. 박한식 교수님은 가장 중요한 인권 중의 하나로 사랑권을 강조하십니다.

미국에도 십여만명의 이산 가족아 있습니다. 고령으로 인해 숫자가 매년 줄어듭니다. 더 이상 늦기전에 이분들의 한을 풀어드리는 것이 인권 사업입니다. 80세가 다 된 이산가족 한분이 생존가능성이 없는 부모님 생신상을 매년 차립니다. 왠 생일잔치냐하고 물으니 내 손으로 묘지의 흙이라도 만저보기 전에는 포기할 수 없다고 대답을 하셔서 듣는 이들의 눈시울을 적셨습니다. 이것이 인륜입니다. 만나고 싶은 사람을 만나게 하는 것이 인권입니다.

이산가족들, 북에 대한 인도적 지원단체들 그리고 북에 다녀왔던 분들이 대북여행금지 철회운동을 전개하고 있습니다. 23일 오후 8시(미동부시간) 3개 단체가 합동으로 LIFT(Let Individual Freely Travel)라는 이름으로 세미나를 개최합니다. 이산가족 상봉은 미국과 북 사이를 평화로 이끄는 다리가 될 것입니다.

Dear friends,

Since 2017, US citizens have been restricted from traveling to North Korea. The ban prevents Korean Americans from visiting their family members in North Korea, hinders humanitarian organizations from delivering critical assistance, and obstructs US citizens from engaging in people-to-people exchanges and peace-building efforts. This is yet another tragic cost of the unresolved 70-year-old Korean War.
