I stayed overnight in West Memphis before crossing the Mississippi River. There are only two bridges leading to Memphis across the river. Both of them are highways. Crossing the highway bridge early Sunday morning was less traffic, so I thought I could cross it relatively easily. The sound of wind on the bridge in the rain was like the tone of a husky, sexual female singer. I've seen too much of the phrase 'Blue Water of the Mississippi' in novels and anything else. The yellowish waters made me wonder if they had ever come to the Mississippi River and wrote such a story. Or maybe they didn't mind about the color of the Mississippi River from the beginning. They were just fascinated by the spectacular scenery of that river and went back and wrote on their desk, and the word 'blue water' might have been the only word they thought of the river. Or maybe the Mississippi River I'm now looking at isn't what it was before. When I came here a few years ago, the Mississippi River over-flooded with yellowish water. Humming Elvis Presley's 'Love Me Tender' in the rain, I crossed the great 6.5-kilometer-long river Mississippi to reach Memphis, the world's largest cotton market. It seemed that it had been named after Memphis, a city in ancient Egypt, but I don¡¯t know the reason or the relation of the two. Dockyards of most rivers, which flow in the vast United States, are inundated with water, for it rains almost every day these days.

The streets of downtown were enveloped in silence on Sunday morning. On Sunday morning in Memphis, the city of blues, church bells were spreading softly in the quiet city instead of the blues, all I see are the homeless sleeping out in the corner of the building. It's no longer strange in the United States to see the city turn into a world of the homeless after all the office workers leave. The city dominated by the homeless was by no means pleasant or piquant to the curiosity of the traveler. I was hurrying out of downtown with a quick walk, not looking sideways .

The leg injury that had been bothering me for two weeks has now healed completely. Just before entering the city of Marion yesterday, the body started to cheer itself up and I could speed up my steps. I was crying out for caution and caution with bad memories of injury, but my legs didn't mind at all and stretched forward quickly. The body is recognizing and responding to the recovery from the injury. The steps toward Mississippi were more vigorous than ever before.

The water flowing like this, the dense forest along the river, the many lives running and flying in the forest, and the fields around it, where drowning is ordinary. are good topics for arousing artistic inspiration. Flowing through almost every city in the central United States, the Mississippi River is a lifeline for many of the life while also inspiring and stimulating artists at the same time.

It was well proved from the fact that Mark Twain and Elvis Presley, the natives of this town, whom the culturally inferior Americans were as proud as Shakespeare, ascended to the top of the art scene.

If it is human nature not to endure not to take risks, then it is the heartbreaking encounter between Tom Sawyer, a young boy in the novel, and me, who is a little older beyond time and space. Yes, that's like a wave of the Mississippi River. It is a quite strange paradox that a troubled student, who is the exact opposite of what the school wants to teach, is loved by people for a long time. People certainly need something to wet people's hearts like this Mississippi River, which is beyond desert-like efficiency and competitiveness.

I have worked hard, but I have lived a life adjusting myself to the current of the times, but a life that is quite different from upgrading career-up and one day I set out this adventure of crossing- America-marathon all of a sudden . It is because that I wanted to let Tom Sawyer, who has been living a long time inside me , see the outer world. I made a raft and allowed myself to explore the Mississippi River to my heart's content. In Memphis today there was a furious encounter between Tom Sawyer, who explores Mississippi on a raft in a novel, and Tom Sawyer inside me, who runs through a vast continent pushing a stroller. This meeting was the biggest climax of this trip.

Many rivers that I have passed and will pass through are all coming to the Mississippi River and flows together, again. Mississippi has something more than enough for a child or an adult also to fill in with curiosity and adventure. The great river makes us spread the wings of the rainbow of imagination, but it is also the object of fear. Only those who ask endless curiosity and questions and sometimes recklessly execute them can get a vivid answer which is alive. If I get an answer that can fill my life even in my late fifties and live a good life for another 50 years, that would be a great deal really.

Humans are also adventurous animals if they are thinking animals. Adventures involve many dangers. Just as an eagle spreads its wings from a cliff and throws itself into the air in order to fly up in the sky, it is an adventure to remove clouds of fear, to spread our imaginary wings, and to throw ourself into Mother Nature. A timid cityman who worships speed and efficiency as a god can never venture. We should remain as calm as possible in situations where we are stressed from the dangers, pain and discomfort that frequently come. So it has been proved clearly that everyone around me, including myself, who defined definitely me as short-tempered, didn't know me. I have dealt with the dangers and inconveniences that have come to me with amazing composure very well.

I hope that it will be a true education that will help each one's individuality, not to learn how to beat others and survive in endless competition. It is also hoped that there will be an education system to help children contribute to society, not an education system to treat children, who think creatively while doing funny things like Tom Sawyer and Huckcleberry Finn, as incompetent and useless ones and to filter out such children. Children with pure and free souls are not called model students. But such children grow up and change society. With the fearless, wild-eyed children at vigorous age locked up in a small space, and with cramming education, their imagination is bound to be stifled and shriveled. Children need to be released into the mountains and the rivers to be creative and strong. In a society of stifling competition, a vicious boy like Tom Sawyer is breathing hard and cheering with fresh wind coming through the open windows, while doing eccentric behavior. There is room for improvement in any society.

In Memphis, I was going to a running shoe store to change all three wheel tires of a cart and buy two pairs of sneakers when a group of people came out of the store and clapped their hands at me. Runners filled up the shop after the eight-kilometer race. In Tom Sawyer's hometown, the atmosphere of welcoming me, another Tom Sawyer who grew old in real life, was very extraordinary. When I entered the store, the owner asks for a handshake , saying, "I've been informed that you¡¯re coming from my friend ." It was the man who stopped me a little while ago and took a picture together with his son. The owner said, ¡°I will present you a pair of sneaker, so please pick up a pair of good sneaker which you like.¡±

Wearing new shoes, I went to a restaurant with a lighter mind and filled my stomach with fried catfish caught from the Mississippi River. It was the specialty of this place. It is said that catfish as big as most children are often caught here. I ran a walking path of 20-kilometer called Green Way that lay through the city of Memphis and came out of it.

Yesterday I was passing through a city called Marion and saw some people painting murals. And I asked what they were drawing. They said, on April 27, 1865, there was a maritime accident on the Mississippi River, which killed more than 1,700 people, and they felt sorry that it was forgotten in the hearts of Americans, so they wanted to reproduce it in murals. I recalled a forgotten maritime accident in Korea, the Sewol accident that some Koreans wanted to be forgotten about. The Sultana sank with more than 2,300 people aboard, but the capacity of the steam locomotive was 376 persons only. It killed more than the Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912. But it is said that the incident was barely reported and buried in history under the consequent news that the civil war ended and President Lincoln was assassinated and the assassinator also died in succession. Even one hundred years later, a sad event is remembered in someone's heart. I can't forget the announcer's comment that everyone was rescued right after the accident at Paengmok Port on April 16, 2014. Come to think of it, it seems right that April is a cruel month.
