There are several Korean marathon clubs in LA. The area is so large that they seem to be gathering by several regions. On Saturday morning, I went to the EASY Runners Club, ran together with them, ate breakfast at McDonald's. After that I visited the KAAT club with Choi Sung-kwon again in order to greeted its members. I think the way they look at me in LA and New York is different. In New York, people who used to run with me every day that they know I am an ordinary marathoner so well that they are skeptical about my challenge such a great job, but in Los Angeles, they are relatively unfamiliar with me, so they applaud the tremendous task I am going to challenge. I shrugged off such unfamiliar applause, but I liked the positive response anyway.

On the eve of my departure, I packed food, fuel and extra sneakers, filling up supplies, and had dinner with Choi Sung-kwon with pork belly and beer. Next Morning I got up at 4:30 a.m. and arrived at Huntington Beach at 6. When I first left New York, I planned this Huntington Beach as my starting point, but the locals advised me it would be better to start at Santa Monica Beach, which has historical significance. So I decided to do so.

Santa Monica Beach is where Route 66 ends. Route 66 was America's first East-West highway and was an important road in the Western Construction Era. Created by Bob Troupe in 1946, the song "National Road No. 66" begins like this : "If you're driving west, just take the Highway as I suggest. It is directly through from Chicago to Los Angeles. About 4,000 kilometers is enough!"

It dawned on the morning of 1 February 2015. The Huntington Beach Marathon was being held, so I went there first and greeted the Korean marathon club members who participated in the marathon. I explained the purpose of my trip and was encouraged more than enough and arrived at Santa Monica, where I started. Huntington is famous for its beautiful beaches and named after railroad man Henry Huntington. It is also where crude oil is being produced.

Santa Monica, California's romantic beach with a subtropical mediterranean climate that is dry and sunny all year round, is cloudy and chilly this morning. The smell of the Pacific Ocean still unfolds like the haunting smell of the old first love. At the end of that sea lies my homeland, Korea still divided in two halves for 70 years. For some reason, even a peace treaty has not been signed, even though the fire of the war has stopped for a long time.

At 9 a.m. on 1 February 2015, I finally ran my first step of this long journey. From the Santa Monica beach on this end of the Pacific Ocean to the far end of the Atlantic Ocean, running only on the muscle of my body without using fossil fuels. I have to run and run eastward endlessly against the rising sun in the east. Like those old westerners who moved west to find a new life, but I run from west to east to design a new life at the age of 59. I will run back on Route 66 where workers in the eastern part of the country and farmers in the central part of the country ran westward in search of their dreams.

I would like to make a new design of my second life while running, and revive the dream of unification, which remains as a small spark in the hearts of all citizens of the two Koreas, even if the unification of the two Koreas is more severe and far than my way. The small fire will grow larger when it meets the wind, and the fire will spread like wildfire when it meets each other. I will become more mature by meeting the harsh pain and loneliness that lies ahead in this trip.

The excitement of going off the road is rolling like the waves of the Pacific Ocean. I have I been surrounded not only with the feeling of isolation from my family and friends, but also with the feeling of the sadness of jumping into a frightening environment.

Choi Sung-kwon, who provided all the conveniences, including food and accommodation from the airport, and Peter Kim, president of the KART club, and Park Sang-chun who canceled the Huntington Marathon today, and Helen Park, and Kim Pyong-soon who came down from Chicago, ran together with me at my first start, encouraging me to take a special trip at the age of 59 who was jumping into a bad, lonely, and difficult journey. All but Choi Sung-kwon are new faces to me, but they help me at the difficult first step of to such a lone and risky trip for the only reason they are Koreans, so if we combine the small spark of unification that we have in the hearts of all Koreans like genes, the desire for reunification will quickly flare up again, I think.

Far away, at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, I can see the 'Hollywood' sign standing tall on the hill of Griffith Park on the southern side of the Hollywood mountains. Entering Beverly Hills, luxury stores such as Louis Vuitton were lined up. Hollywood is so close that famous movie stars and businessmen have begun to build and live in luxury. This is also where the Indians used to live. Even the trees along the street smells like a charm of richness.

And soon we passed through the Korean town of L.A. and the Java market, where Koreans dominate the commercial market. On one side of the Java market, the tent camps of the homeless are lined up endlessly. Trash and broken pieces of liquor bottles, people wandering aimlessly, the smell of marijuana mixed in the rotting smell, and those grimy sad eyes puffed up with drugs. It is a heartbreaking reality in the United States that innocent children are playing in places where even taxi drivers do not want to go. There is also a gap between rich and poor even here, so people who have their own space in tents are said to belong to the rich.

It is also irony that politicians in the U.S. are turning their eyes from this reality and focusing on human rights in other countries. I just passed Beverly Hills, the envy of almost everyone around the world, and it's amazing that there is such a poor community not far away from it. As I dive into the middle of the U.S., I can see such naked reality from the first day. It's not surprising to see urban slums in the United States, but how can so many people lose their homes in affluent countries like the United States and live in one corner of the city as a group? Is it simply because they are lazy and lacking in nature? Seeing at a glance the stark contrast between wealth and poverty, I find it confusing to see the diseased part of the U.S. that is so unbelievably serious to my eyes on the first day of crossing the continent. Has the U.S. not had any solution to it?

The name ¡®California¡¯ means paradise or fantasy island in the novels of Spanish explorers. California actually has warm, mild weather and abundant resources and natural scenery of paradise. Then, as the gold rush begined, it¡¯is sometimesbeen called ¡®the Golden State¡¯. I thought the Indians, who were the masters of this paradise, had no wish. What more did they want to live in a paradise with everything in it? Is it said that hope is like a rose blooming in despair. Having been banished from paradise and left the Indian reservation in a bad state, it occurred to me that there was a great deal of hope to them now. Now I am running with great hope in my heart, too. The road to the vast expanse of paradise is not always far away, but right in front of us.
