In 2003, when I was in second grade, I came to New York from South Korea. Both my Korean friends and American friends are very important to me. Summer Vacations in Korea and U.S.

In Korea, I have noticed that summer break here is very different compared to the U.S. It is common to see students dressed in uniforms. They don't just wear uniforms in school, but throughout the whole day since afterschool study programs play a big role in South Korea's education.

During the summer break, the students in Korea are given tons of homework to do for the summer. Unlike giving lists of books to read over the summer like the U.S., Korean students have to complete homework for each of their subject.

Although homework is long and tedious, almost every student leaves it for the last day of the summer break. If they don't complete and bring their homework on the first day of school, they get points off from their current average.

Also, there is a special day during the vacation where students gather and clean the whole school. This way, students can help the school with cleaning and organizing the classrooms.

Similar to schools in New York, students in South Korea have club activities. Although it is optional in my school in New York, Korean students are obligated to take at least one club.

For example, there is the movie club, where students actually go to the movie theater and watch a movie. After watching the movie, they analyze the movie and write any opinions or thoughts they had while watching the movie.

Lastly, Korean students usually spend their summer break with their friends. In the U.S., people usually spend time with their family. However in Korea, students often hang out with their friends like going to the amusement park together or going to movies.
