The midterm election of 2018 clearly pointed out the overriding issues and trends in the U.S.A. They’re health care and economic policies(fiscal and monetary/tax and spending). Too many people are suffering and living with great fear and anxiety of not being able to afford health care and economic stability/security. The trend/mood of the country is moving toward the grim resolve that things will get better and has to get better; candidates with positive messages definitely did better than with fear, hate, loathing, and anxiety.
Compared to the Democratic primary in 2016 — let alone the general election—- this time, progressivism is more openly and freely professed and accepted. A candidate in her twenties, claiming to be a social democrat, won her seat in the Congress; she is already making her voice heard loud and clear.
Of course, progressivism has been around for a long time, and the basic issues are the same; free enterprise/capitalism vs. government control. Simply put, how to make the pie bigger and how to share it. These are age-old issues; these issues are forever work in progress. It is a fine and delicate balance, always. That is why leaders have to be knowledgeable, smart and wise. Moving toward fairness and justice; it is just that the definitions keep adding nuances as history moves along.
As we can see in real time, there are many many crucial issues which cry for attention and solutions. The U.S.A. Is totally silly and wasting time, at the time, with nonsense. “Democracy is messy.” Agreed but it is time for the general public to be ungraded and get awakened of the serious nature of the current issues. At least the majority. But it is not going to be easy because the issues are complicated and takes time and effort to comprehend; let alone being part of the solution.
Next election cycle, the winning theme is going to be ‘Economy Stupid’ explained simply and clearly. It is not going to be culture war, fear, hate, anxiety, loathing, silliness, and going against history. After all we’re in it together, all together. The message has to be a positive one with clear vision. Crystal clear. It is not about what I want: it is about what we, the village, need.
