The Syrian debacle and, in specific, the use of chemical weapons by the Syrians are testing the power of influence by the U.S. and the insight and judgement of President Obama as a leader.

The Syrian debacle has its origin in the dark and ugly side of the human nature and the nature of the debacle, as always, is not just limited to Syria. There are many components to it; historical ( the history of the empires and tribes), religious, personal and tribal greed, grievances, and paranoia, geopolitics, the state of the economy, and, even, the climate change which caused the severe droughts and many failed farmers.
This is a situation with no simple or quick solution. There is no benevolent superpower which can impose negotiated and peaceful policy. The solution has to come mostly from within Syria, but they are far far from ready to come together. One gets the new appreciation of the man who came up with the solution of love 2000 years ago.
The use of chemical weapon in Syria is an issue the whole world should be concerned, and do something about. WW1 had shown the horrendous effects of the use of chemical weapons. The world now has the treaty to ban the use of chemical weapons and it is signed by 188 countries, practically, every countries. President Obama rightly mentioned the red line against the use of the chemical weapons during a news conference at the White House on 8/20/12.
On 8/21/13, there were clear evidences that civilians were attacked with chemical weapons. The whole world was enraged and said we should do something about it. President Obama claimed that the Syrian regime should be punished. John Kerry was angry and indignant. There were talks of imminent bombing of targets in Syria.
The rumor had it on Thursday, 8/29/13. But no bombing came. On 8/29/13, the British Parliament rejected bombing of the Assad regime. It was becoming clear that there were no strong support for the bombing in the U.S., either. It became a real dilemma for the President. Everybody was watching and guessing what he would do next.
On 8/31/13, Saturday, the President announced he will ask the approval of the Congress for the bombing while he is committed and able to use the force as the President, the Commander in Chief. He has tossed the ball to the Congress. It will buy him some time and an escape route for not bombing Syria. The consensus for the bombing is not just there. From 8/5/13 to 10/1/13, the congress is in session 9 days. The Congress may not be ready to discuss the issue any time soon and nobody is in a hurry to discuss the issue. The bombing may just fade away. Tossing the ball may be the best way to handle the Presidential dilemma.
This weariness of the world and the U.S. means many important developments in the world affairs. But it is an another topic.
