10.2~25 가라지 아트센터

1970 년대부터 작가와 교수로 꾸준히 활발한 작업을 이어오고 있는 추상화가(抽象畫家) 프란세스 하인즈의 개인전이 오는 10월 2일부터 10월 25일까지 가라지 아트센터에서 열린다.

Then and Now: The Shape and Line of Home (그때와 지금: 집의 형상과 선)이란 주제로 열리는 이번 전시에서는 작가의 눈으로 바라본 집이 있는 퀸즈의 동네풍경들이 추상화 되어 표현된 1970 년대의 작업 7점과 최근의 작업 4점 등 총 11 점의 회화작업들이 전시된다.

흔히 보는 건축물들이지만 작가의 작품에서 선과 색, 질감들로 추상화 되어 표현되어진 문, 창문, 지붕과 같은 건축적 요소들은 익숙한 풍경을 아름답고 이상적으로 보여주며 때로는 관람객들에게 향수와 궁금증을 유발시킨다.

겹겹이 쌓인 붓질과 단순한 선과 색으로 채워진 캔버스 속의 추상화들은 관객들의 일상의 삶과 동떨어지지 않은 곳에서 따뜻한 시선으로 이곳과 저곳, 현재와 과거, 안과 밖, 들어가고 나오는 것에 관해 철학적 질문을 던진다.

프란세스 헤인즈 작가는 세인트 존스 대학에서 학사를, 뉴욕대학에서 석사를 취득하고Art Students League 와 이탈리아의 Academy of Fine Arts 에서도 공부했다. National Endowment for the Arts의 그랜트와 여러 수상기록이 있는 가의 작품은 브루클린 뮤지움, 뉴왁 뮤지움, 허드슨 리버 뮤지움, 퀸즈 뮤지움을 비롯한 미 전역 뮤지움과 공공기관에 소장되어 있다.

주최측은 “과거와 현재의 작품을 마주하여 감상할 수 있는 이번 전시는 지난 40년간 지나온 변천사를 작품을 통해 한눈에 관람할 수 있다”며 “오랜세월 퀸즈에서 시간을 보내왔고 현재도 퀸즈에 거주하고 있는 작가가 그린 동네풍경을 퀸즈에 설립된 커뮤니티 아트 센터에서 전시를 한다는 점 또한 의미있는 관람 포인트가 될 것”이라고 기대했다.

10월 25일 일요일 오후 3시엔 작가와 함께하는 수체화 워크숍이 진행된다. 가라지 아트 센터의 모든 프로그램은 무료이다. 팬데믹으로 별도의 오프닝은 없으며 워크숍과 전시 모두 예약제로 운영된다. 방문 및 예약은 contact@garageartcenter.org 자세한 정보는 www.garageartcenter.org 참조하면 된다.

About the Exhibition

This exhibition showcases seven early paintings by Frances Hynes along with four current pieces. Her early works allude to buildings that the artist might pass during any day in the Queens County of the 1970s and 1980s. The minimal and abstract images have been edited, pared-down and reduced.

These paintings may hint at something utopian and abstract, yet the shapes and lines in her paintings surround us. They are not too distanced from our daily views of windows and doorways, and they suggest concepts of duality and transition: here/there, past/present, entry/exit, and inside/outside.

Looking carefully at these works the viewer may see pentimento or regrets, evidence of changes made during the painting process, or traces of forgotten colors beneath the final layer of paint on the canvas. Here we see an artist who is curious about changing the position of shape and line during the painting process and these shifts and repetitions become a metaphor, perhaps suggesting the ongoing and continuous movement of life around us.

"Seven paintings in this exhibition date from 1979 – 88. Three current works (2019-2020) are also included. In these recent paintings, the geometric, architectural imagery of the former work is joined with organic landscape imagery and the feeling becomes more fleeting, light and airy. The horizontal and vertical structure derived from architecture remains a constant in all my paintings."

“I grew up in Bayside, Queens when this locale was transforming from a rural place to a more suburban one of single-family homes. The Garage Art Center is an innovative and creative venture contributing to the visual arts community of Queens and I am happy to be exhibiting at this new venue in Bayside.”
