한복차림 유엔본부 만세동참 ‘위안부항의’ 시위도

뉴욕 유엔본부앞에서 열린 삼일절 100주년 기념 만세 운동을 재현하는 행사에 일본계 여성이 동참해 감동어린 화제를 낳고 있다.

뉴욕한인회 주관으로 1일 유엔본부 앞 다그 함마르셸드 광장에서 열린 행사는 영하(零下)의 쌀쌀한 날씨에도 약 400명이 참가한 가운데 이마에 태극기 문양 머리띠를 두르고, 손에는 태극기를 흔들며 “대한독립 만세”를 힘차게 외쳤다.

특히 여성들은 흰색 저고리와 검정 치마를 입고 1919년 아우내 장터에서 유관순 열사가 이끈 만세운동을 재현했다. 이들 여성중에는 유관순 열사의 조카손녀 유혜경(54 퀸즈거주) 씨와 일본계 미국인 레이첼 클라크(Rachel Clark) 씨가 동참해 시선을 끌었다.

뉴저지에 거주하는 클라크씨는 일본에서 만난 미국인 남성과 결혼해 이주한 이민1세로 통, 번역사로 일하고 있다. 클라크씨는 위안부 수요시위를 뉴욕과 뉴저지에서 수년째 벌이는 김은주 전 뉴욕한인교사회장과 친구를 맺은 인연으로 이날 행사에 참가하게 된 것으로 전해졌다.

클라크씨는 현지 언론과의 인터뷰에서 “난 일본에서 태어났지만 이웃인 한국과의 역사를 잘 몰랐다. 뒤늦게 위안부와 같은 비극적인 역사를 알게 되었고, 이번에 처음으로 삼일절 행사에 참여하게 되었다”고 전했다.

클라크씨는 행사후엔 안정연씨와 기정숙씨 등 일부 참가자들과 함께 유엔본부 앞에서 위안부 범죄에 대한 일본정부의 공식 사과를 촉구하는 시위(示威)를 벌였다.

김은주 회장은 “이날 학교 수업을 진행하느라 참석못해 안타까웠지만 일본인 친구, 이 저대신 독립만세를 외치고 왔고 일본군 성노예 규탄시위와 뉴욕 수요집회도 주도해 기쁘고 감사하다”고 말했다.

김은주 회장은 “Rachel과는 제주 4.3사태를 다룬 다큐 영화 ‘제주의 영혼들(The Ghosts of Jeju Regis Tremblay 감독)을 전 세계에 알리는 작업에 하면서 친구가 되었다”고 소개했다.

이날 행사는 맨해튼 1번 애비뉴, 47번가에서 이뤄졌으며 수십ｍ 떨어진 주유엔 대한민국대표부가 있는 45번가까지 대한독립 만세를 외치며 행진을 벌였다. 이어 주유엔대표부에서 뉴욕한인회 주관으로 3·1운동 100주년 공식 기념식이 열렸다.

행사엔 한인시민들과 함께 미육군사관학교(웨스트포인트)에 재학 중인 한인 2세 생도 10명과 에드워드 브라운스틴 뉴욕주하원의원, 론 김 뉴욕주하원의원 등 미 정치인들이 참석했고 한국여성경제인협회 세종·충남지회, 천안시 관계자들도 함께 했다.

이날 오후엔 뉴저지 팰리세이즈팍에서 뉴저지한인회 주최로 3.1절 100주년 행사가 열렸다. 행사엔 뉴욕한국학교 허병렬 이사장과 뉴저지 보리사 원영주지스님 등이 참석했고 삼일절을 상징하는 닥종이 작품들이 전시돼 시선을 끌었다.

“I've learned the modern history between Corea and Japan.”

Here we go, sister!

One of the highlights of the day was that I participated in the 100th anniversary event of the March 1st Movement among Korean Americans. For the first time in my life I tried the traditional Corean costume (like a uniform). Hundreds of people gathered from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania under the feelingly cold sky.

There were people of various political stances: non-Political, left, moderate, right, and ultra right: the same phenomenon as in the current Japan.

I had a little talk with the young Corean West Point students. they talked about the honor and the contribution to the nation, with a refreshing smile. I wish I could talk longer with them, but unfortunately I didn't have time! I wish I could say that I want no one's kids to kill anyone’s kids!

I also received an interview with a Corean TV station. “I had Japanese parents, and I was born and raised in Japan, and I didn't know about the country next to us, and I did not learn about our neighbors’ history, and it was the first time in the U.S. that I've learned the modern history between Corea and Japan.” I was able to mention a little bit of the diplomatic issues as well.

Later, we went to the hall of the Office of the UN Ambassador from Corea and enjoyed the song and speeches. Korean-style lunch boxes were offered prior to the end.

After the event, we did a standing appeal in front of the UN and demanded an official apology from the Japanese government on the military comfort women issue. (Rachel Clark)
