Sophia Park awarded the 2024 AHL - Chun Family Foundation Curatorial OpenCall Grant

The AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Korean artists, has announced the selection of Sophia Park as the recipient of this year¡¯s AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Open Call grant.

Founded in 2007 by businessman Chun Myung-guk, the Chun Family Foundation has awarded scholarships to over ten Korean students annually. Chairman Chun Myung-guk is actively engaged in philanthropic work throughout the Korean community, as well as in scholarship projects to support students. Since 2017, the AHL Foundation has selected curatorial fellows with the support of the Chun Family Foundation, providing grants and nurturing Korean exhibition planners. In 2024, the AHL Foundation and the Chun Family Foundation launched the Curatorial Open Call grant through a direct sponsorship agreement.

Curators selected for the Curatorial Open Call grant will have the opportunity to curate exhibitions at the AHL Foundation Gallery (2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10030) and promote diverse artists within the New York art scene.

Sophia Park (she/her), the recipient of the 2024 AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Open Call grant, is a writer and curator based in Brooklyn, NY, U.S. She currently works as a Curator for the 15th Gwangju Biennale in Gwangju, South Korea. Previously, she worked as the Director of External Relations at Fractured Atlas, a U.S.-based national nonprofit arts service organization, and as an adjunct faculty teaching entrepreneurship and the arts at New York University. She is part of slow cook, a curatorial collaboration with Caroline Taylor Shehan, and is a co-founder of Jip Gallery (2018 - 2022). She has participated in curatorial projects and programs with Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons (Utrecht, Netherlands), Gyopo (Los Angeles, U.S.), 2022 Singapore Biennale (Singapore), Asian American Arts Alliance (NYC, U.S.), and others. Her writing can be found in publications such as Monument Lab¡¯s Bulletin, Asymptote Journal, Womanly Mag, Inciter Art, and others. She holds a B.A. in Neuroscience from Oberlin College and an M.A. in Curatorial Practice from the School of Visual Arts.

Sook Nyu Lee Kim, President and Founder of the AHL Foundation, stated, ¡°The AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Open Call aims to nurture future Korean artists and curators. We hope that Sophia Park¡¯s successful exhibition will promote the value of Korean art in New York¡¯s cultural scene. We are grateful for the support of the Chun Family Foundation, and through this collaboration, the AHL Foundation will continue to strive toward our vision of contributing to the advancement of Korean contemporary art.¡±
