안녕하십니까. 답스페리 하이스쿨의 영예로운 교장 이기동(Keith Yi)입니다. 캐플란 교육감을 비롯, 홀더맨 여사, 인트리에리 여사 등 교육위원회 임원들, 교직원과 부모님 가족 친지분들, 그리고 무엇보다 2011학년 졸업생 여러분을 환영합니다.

먼저 따뜻한 환영사를 해준 미스 캐서린에게 감사합니다. 12학년의 어드바이저로 몇주전 졸업생들의 멋진 프롬파티를 준비하느라 수고해주신 미스터 핸레이와 미스 헨리에게도 감사를 드립니다. 졸업생들을 위해 감동적인 스피치를 해주신 캐플란 교육감, 제가 답스페리에 부임하기전에 졸업한 선배로서 이 자리에 와 후배들을 위해 격려연설을 해주신 레이첼 씨에게도 감사를 드립니다.

미지(未知)의 도전에 관해 말씀해 주신 미스터 조지, 우리 인생의 아름다움에 대한 좋은 말씀을 해주신 데이빗 씨에게도 특별한 감사를 전하고자 합니다. 여러분 모두 멋진 말씀들을 해주셨습니다.

해마다 저는 이제 졸업장을 받고 고교생활을 마감하는 우리 졸업생들 앞에서 마지막 인사 말씀을 드리는 책임을 갖고 있습니다. ‘졸업식’이라는 단어는 노력을 ‘시작한다’는 의미를 갖고 있습니다. 답스페리 하이스쿨의 졸업생들은 다음 생의 새로운 단계를 시작하고 착수(着手)하게 됩니다. 그리고 그것은 약속과 기회와 성취로 가득한 삶이 될 것입니다.

미래를 논하기전에 저는 왜 오늘의 졸업식이 제게 특별한 것인지 말씀드려야겠습니다. 이번 졸업생들을 제가 두 개의 단어로 표현한다면 그것은 봉사(Service)와 열정(Spirit)입니다. 저의 25년 교직인생에 있어 오늘 이 졸업생들만큼 봉사활동에 열정을 갖고 헌신적인 활동을 한 사람들은 없었습니다. 정말 놀라울 정도로 많은 기부와 봉사활동 이벤트들을 학생들은 지난 4년간 펼쳐 왔습니다.

대부분의 학생들은 졸업 마지막 학기가 되면 공부에 흥미를 잃는 ‘졸업병(Senioritis)’을 앓게 됩니다. 그러나 이번 졸업생들은 바로 지난주에도 ‘닷지 볼 토너먼트’를 조직해 일본대지진 희생자들을 위해 수천 달러의 기금을 모았습니다.

헬렌 켈러는 이렇게 말했습니다. “행복은 그냥 오는 것이 아니라 우리가 하는만큼 오는 것이다. 행복은 남이 우리를 위해 하는 것이 아니라 우리가 남을 위해 먼저 생각하고 느끼는 것이다.”

답스페리 하이스쿨에서 갖는 이번 졸업식은 저의 여섯 번째이자 마지막 연설이 되겠지만 저는 우리 학생들이 다른 이들을 위해 힘이 되어주는 새로운 전통이 시작되기를 희망합니다. 여러분께서는 졸업가운과 모자를 쓴 많은 졸업생들을 보고 계십니다. 이 학생들은 다른 이들을 돕는 이상의 일을 했고 그 전통이 앞으로도 계속되기를 바랍니다. 그리하여 이 젊은 친구들에게 갈채(喝采)를 보내게 될 것입니다.

6년전 제가 이곳 답스페리 하이스쿨의 새로운 교장에 부임하면서 제가 한 첫 번째 일중 하나는 동네를 둘러보고 이곳 워터프런트 파크에 온 것이었습니다.

과거 생물교사로 재직하던 시절 강을 건널 때마다 수억년의 지형적 역사를 간직한 장엄한 팰리세이즈 절벽에 감동을 받았습니다. 또한 굽이쳐 흐르는 아름다운 허드슨강을 경외(敬畏)의 눈길로 바라봤습니다.

저는 생물교사로 많은 학생들에게 물의 순환(循環)을 가르쳤습니다. 여러분께서는 증발(蒸發)과 응결(凝結), 강수(降水)의 과정을 아실 겁니다. 오늘 저는 다시 한번 우리의 삶이 물의 순환과 같다는 것을 생각해 봅니다. 오래전 작은 개울에서 시작된 물의 여행은 거대한 대양(大洋)으로 모이게 됩니다.

졸업생 여러분은 대부분 인생의 여행을 17년전 혹은 18년전 바로 이곳 답스페리에서 시작했을 것입니다. 그러나 이제 여러분은 매사추세츠와 노스캐롤라이나, 위스콘신, 펜실베니아 등 여러분이 이전에 경험하지 못한 많은 주들로 떠날 것입니다. 몇 달 후면 여러분이 가족들과 친구들을 떠나가겠지만 저는 여러분이 언젠가는 집으로 다시 돌아오리라는 것을 압니다.

여러분들처럼 저 또한 답스페리를 떠납니다. 거의 50년전 제가 태어난 모국 한국으로 돌아갑니다. 그것은 지난 몇달간 제게 달콤하면서도 쓰라린 느낌을 주었습니다. 저는 여생을 통해 소중히 간직할 멋진 추억들을 그리워할 것입니다. 그러나 여러분처럼 저는 새로운 여행을 앞두고 기대에 차 있습니다.

여러분이 답스페리 하이스쿨을 떠난 후에 여러분 하나하나가 열정(熱情)을 찾고 그것을 추구할 용기(勇氣)를 갖기를 바랍니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 금언중 하나를 소개합니다. 윈스턴 처칠은 “성공은 열정을 잃지 않고 실패를 거듭하는 능력”이라고 말했습니다.

여러분보다 나이가 많은 친지와 답스페리 졸업식에 참석하신 분들께서는 골프에 대한 저의 열정이 얼마나 큰지 아실 것입니다. 전 항상 졸업식 축사에서 골프에 관한 이야기를 했습니다. 오늘도 예외는 아닙니다. 아버지의 날 주말이 있는 주간에 세계 최고의 골퍼들이 출전하는 4대 메이저 중 하나인 US오픈 골프토너먼트가 열렸습니다.

로리 맥클로이라는 스물두살된 북아일랜드 선수는 지난 4월 또다른 메이저 대회인 마스터스 대회에서 파이널 라운드에 최악의 플레이를 하는 바람에 우승의 그린 재킷을 입지 못했습니다. 그러나 US오픈에서 그는 지난 이틀간 US오픈 111년의 역사상 최저타 기록을 세우며 선두를 달렸습니다. 어제 마지막 홀에서 그는 단 한 개의 보기도 하지 않는, 거의 완벽한 플레이를 했습니다.

스물두살의 젊은 나이와 짧은 경력에도 그가 겪은 역경(逆境)은 성공으로 잉태(孕胎)되고 있습니다. 그렇습니다. 새로운 도전을 두려워하지 마십시오. 윈스턴 처칠처럼 비록 실패한다 해도 결코 열정을 잃지 마십시오.

오늘 여러분은 장차의 큰 성공을 위해 필요한 새로운 경험을 찾아 떠납니다. 이런 새로운 경험들을 겪을 때 여러분 자신은 물론, 세계속의 시민이 되어 우리가 살고 있는 세계의 차이가 무엇인지 생각하게 되기를 바랍니다.

제 희망은 여러분이 하고자하는 것을 추구하면서 얻게 되는 경험을 갖고 떠나라는 것입니다. 더 크고, 더 나은 것들을 찾아 떠나면서 여러분 모두가 인생의 다음 여정(旅程)을 시작하는 열정을 추구하기를 바랍니다.

2011년 답스페리 하이스쿨 졸업생은 제 가슴속에 특별한 존재로 영원히 남아 있을 것입니다. 지난 4년간 여러분과 추억과 경험을 나눌 수 있는 것은 영광이었습니다.

여러분의 부모님과 가족들도 여러분을 도와 이룬 성취를 통해 자랑과 기쁨을 느끼고 함께 나눌 것입니다. 이 졸업식을 마친 후에 그분들의 자랑스러운 얼굴들을 들여다보며 여러분이 오늘에 이르기까지 베푼 사랑과 헌신(獻身)을 확인하십시오.

졸업생 여러분, 감사합니다 그리고 지금까지 해낸 일들을 축하드립니다. 또한 지난 4년간 우리들을 믿고 신뢰(信賴)해준 부모님들께도 감사드립니다. 그것은 정말 또 하나의 영광이었습니다.

저는 항상 교육은 세상에서 가장 위대한 직업이라고 말해 왔습니다, 저는 여러분의 자녀들을 가르칠 기회를 가진 행운아라고 생각합니다. 여러분의 선생님들도 오늘 저녁 특별한 방법으로 공유(共有)할 것입니다. 그분들에게 오늘은 여러분과 함께 한 ‘조인트 벤처’의 최고 정점(頂點)입니다.

피시벡 선생님의 영어과목인 비평논문을 어떻게 쓰는 지 배우는 것부터 애도나 선생님의 이탈리아어 동사 활용, 헨리 선생님의 화학 방정식을 다루는 것까지 선생님들의 헌신과 봉사는 여러분 모두 최선의 노력을 다하도록 독려(督勵)했습니다.

다시 한번 여러분에게 감사와 여러분이 해낸 것에 대한 축하를 드립니다. 여러분이 선생님들에 대한 진심어린 존경을 잘 알고 있습니다.

제가 가장 좋아하는 교사 영화중 하나인 홀랜드 선생님의 '오퍼스'에 이런 말이 있습니다. “선생님은 두 개의 직업을 갖는다. 어린 자들의 마음에 지식을 채우는 것이 그렇다. 그러나 더 중요한 것은 그들의 마음에 콤파스를 주어 그들의 지식이 낭비되지 않도록 하는 것이다.”

여러분 중 많은 사람들이 아직 여러분의 남은 인생에서 무엇을 해야 할지 정확히 모를 것입니다. 그러나 교장으로서 저는 답스페리 하이스쿨의 경험이 여러분에게 인생의 여행에서 방향을 설정하는데 일익(一翼)을 맡을 것이라고 기대합니다.

인생의 새로운 출발을 시작하는 시점에서 제가 그러하듯 여러분이 선생님들을 자랑스러워할 것으로 확신합니다. 이처럼 멋지고 좋은 날 여러분 모두에게 여러분이 받은 것을 활용해서 앞을 향해 나아가라고 말하고자 합니다.

우리들을 자랑스럽게 해주세요. 앞으로 여러분의 인생에서 성취할 많은 것들로 우리를 자랑스럽게 해주세요. 무엇보다 최선을 다하면 성취할 수 있다고 여러분 자신을 믿으세요. 꿈을 크게 가지세요.

저는 어젯밤 메일랜드의 아름다운 골프코스에서 열린 US오픈 골프대회를 시청하면서 그곳에 있으면 좋겠다는 생각을 했습니다. 그러나 저는 지금 이 순간 허드슨강과 장엄한 팰리세이즈의 절벽을 바라보고 있습니다. 여러분 모두와 이곳에서 마지막 순간을 함께 하고 있는 것입니다.

2011년 졸업생 여러분은 지난 4년간 제게 영감(靈感)과도 같은 존재였습니다. 여러분께 감사와 축하를 드립니다. 행운이 함께 하기를 빕니다. 제가 좋아하는 SF 스타트렉의 캐릭터 미스터 스폭의 말을 인용합니다. “영원토록 번영하라.” 감사합니다.

Good evening!

My name is Keith Yi, the proud principal of DFHS. It gives me great pleasure to welcome the members of the Board of Education, Mrs. Kaplan, Mrs. Holderman, Mrs. Intrieri, faculty and staff, parents and families, friends, and, most importantly, the members of Dobbs Ferry High School’s Class of 2011.

First, I want to thank Katherine for the warm welcoming remarks. Mr. Hanley and Ms. Henry, thank you for being the 12th Grade Advisors and for organizing a wonderful senior prom a couple of weeks ago. Mrs. Kaplan, I want to thank you for your heartfelt statements to our graduating class. Rachel, obviously you graduated before I came to DFHS and I want to thank you for coming back to your alma mater and addressing our graduating seniors.

George, I want to thank you for your comments about taking on unknown challenges and finally, David, I want to thank you for your very thoughtful speech about recognizing and appreciating the beauty in each moment of our lives.

So, thank you all for your beautiful speeches.

Each year, I am given the responsibility to give the final remarks to our graduates before they are presented with their diplomas, which signifies an end to their high school career.

The word commencement means to “initiate” or to “start” an endeavor. So, what is it that we initiate with our commencement exercise this evening? The graduates of DFHS are initiating or beginning the next phase in their lives, one that I believe will be filled with promise, opportunity, and accomplishments.

Before we talk about the future, I want to first share my thoughts about why this particular graduating class is so special to me. If I could choose two words to describe this class, it would be service and spirit. In all of my 25 years in education, I have never seen a group of students with so much spirit and who have done more when it comes to community service than these teenagers sitting in front of us. It is amazing how many fundraisers and community service events these students have been involved in for the past four years. For example, in most schools where seniors are suffering from senioritis at this time of the year, our seniors organized a Dodge Ball tournament last week and raised over thousand dollars for Japan.

Helen Keller once said, “Happiness cannot come from without. It must come from within. It is not what we see and touch or that which others do for us which makes us happy; it is that which we think and feel and do, first for the other fellow and then for ourselves.”

Though this is my sixth and last commencement here at Dobbs Ferry High School, I hope we are starting a new tradition of recognizing students who give part of themselves for others. You may have noticed a number of students wearing blue cords today with their caps and gowns. These are students who have gone above and beyond to help others and I hope that this tradition will continue in the future.

With that, can we give a round of applause to these young people.

Six years ago, when I found out that I was going to be the new principal at Dobbs Ferry High School, one of the first things that I did was to visit the community and drive around the town and I came here to this Waterfront Park. 
Being a former Biology teacher, I appreciated the look across the river and seeing the majestic cliffs of Palisades that is the result of hundreds of millions of years of geological history. I also admired the water flowing down the beautiful Hudson River.

I have taught the water cycle to many students in my Biology class, you know the one about evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Well, today I am once again thinking about how our lives are like the water cycle. The water that we see over there began its journey a long time ago from little streams, but now they are on their way to the big ocean where it all started.

I know that for most of you, your life’s journey began right here in Dobbs Ferry 17 or 18 years ago. But now, you are off to Massachusetts, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and many other places that you have never been before. Although many of you are leaving behind your family and friends in a couple of months, I know that you will someday return home.

Just like so many of you, I am also leaving Dobbs Ferry. For me, I am returning to my homeland, Korea – the place where I was born almost fifty years ago. It has been bittersweet for me these past several months knowing that I will miss so many wonderful memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life…..but like you, I am excited about beginning a new journey.

As you leave DFHS, I want to challenge each and every one of you to find your passion and have courage to pursue it and don’t be afraid of failure. One of my favorite quotes is by Winston Churchill who said, “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.”

For those of you who have had older siblings and attended previous DF graduations know how passionate I am about golf and how I always mention something about golf in my commencement speech, well today is no exception. For those golfers out there, you know that Father’s Day weekend usually means the US Open Golf Tournament, one of the four majors that are played each year with the best golfers in the world. I had the opportunity to watch a little bit yesterday and I witnessed one of the greatest golf ever being played at a Major tournament.

Rory Mcilroy is a 22 year old golfer from Northern Ireland who at the Masters, another major tournament, in April had a disastrous and one of the worst final rounds in the tournament history and failed to win the green jacket. Some people doubted his talents and said that it will be very difficult to recover from his failure. However, for the past two days he not only recovered, but he shot the lowest two rounds in US Open’s 111 years history. Actually, until the last hole yesterday he did not have a single bogey, meaning he had played almost perfect golf for two days.

Though only 22 years old, he has already been through much adversity in his short career, but for him it is that adversity that breeds success.

So don’t be afraid of taking on new challenges and like Winston Churchill said, even if you fail, never lose enthusiasm.

Today, you are beginning a new journey to seek out new experiences that will allow you to fulfill your big dreams. And as you take on these new experiences, I want to challenge each and every one of you to think not only for yourself but to think how you could be a global citizen and make a difference in the world we live in.

My hope is that you will take away the experiences that you have gained from Dobbs Ferry to pursue the things that you love to do. And as you go off to bigger and better things, I would like to encourage all of you to pursue your passions as you start your next phase of your life’s journey.

The Dobbs Ferry High School’s Class of 2011 will forever have a special place in my heart. It has been a privilege to have shared with you the memories and experiences for the past four years.

Your parents and family share this day with you - their pride in you and their joy in your achievements reflect a measure of their support, their encouragement, and their love. After you leave this ceremony and look into their proud faces, see the love and support that has nurtured and sustained you and brought you this far in life. For you, I thank and congratulate them for a job well done. I also want to thank the parents for trusting us with you for the past four years - it has truly been a privilege.

I always have said that teaching is the greatest profession in the world and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to teach your children.

Your teachers share this evening with you in a special way, too. For them, it marks the culmination of a joint venture. From learning how to write a critical essay in Mr. Fischbeck’s English class, to conjugate a verb in Mrs. Addona’s Italian class, or to balance a chemical equation in Mrs. Henry’s Chemistry class, their dedication and commitment for excellence have served to challenge each and every one of you to put your best effort.

For you, I salute and thank them for a job well done. I know your respect and admiration for them to be heartfelt and enduring.

In one of my favorite teacher movies, Mr. Holland’s Opus, there is a quote, “A teacher has two jobs; fill young minds with knowledge, yes, but more important, give those minds a compass so that that knowledge doesn't go to waste.” I am sure many of you do not know yet exactly what you want to do with the rest of your life, but as your principal, I hope that your DFHS experience has played some part in giving you a sense of direction in your life’s journey.

As we ask these youngsters to start their next phase of their lives, I am sure you are as proud of them as I am. So, on this wonderful and perfect day, I say to all of these young people: Go forward, take advantage of what you have been given. Make us proud. Make us so proud of the accomplishments that are yet to come in your lives. Above all, believe in yourselves that you can achieve anything with hard work and effort. Dream Big!

As I was watching the US Open last night at a beautiful golf course in Maryland, I thought to myself I wish I was there. But today, as I look across the Hudson and the majestic cliffs of Palisades, there is no other place than be here for the last time with all of you guys.

To the class of 2011, you have been my inspiration these past four years and I thank you.

Congratulations, good luck, and again borrowing from my favorite science fiction, Star Trek character, Mr. Spock, “live long and prosper.”
