When I was leaving at dawn after spending a night in Shamrock, Texas' last city, the fog fell down all the earth. The mist embraced the innermost flesh of the spring plain, which was as green as a bride's inner skirt. The light green of the tree, which has just begun to suck up the sap in the mist, is as lovable as the silhouette of new bride¡¯s inner skirt. I feel heavy now because of the fog. No. Not that. In fact, I've been running too much for these few days. I always run more than I planned to run, because I must find bed and food that are proper with my tight budget. That¡¯s why I'm getting much tired now. When I entered Oklahoma, it was still over 600 meters above sea level, but clearly the desert disappeared and it was a great plain. This was the residence of Cherokee Indians, Chokto and Chikaso, who were expelled from the east, but even this later became the residence of whites. Now I can see quite a bit of wood, and I can see grass growing on the ranch, and I can see the ground fields plowed for planting.

Anyway, Ham In-cheol, my senior, who lives in Texas, was scheduled to drive here for more than five hours on Sunday, today, to encourage me to run. I asked him to bring me 5 pounds of rice and gimchi. Today, I'm going to sleep in a tent at a rest stop just past the city of Erick, Oklahoma. I met my senior there. I met someone I knew for the first time in two months. So far, I have met new scenery, new climate, and new people that I have never met. Meeting an old friend in the space of a hermit with nothing familiar made me feel happy. The picnic area at the rest stop was also in good mood for encountering an old friend. I thank him and thank him a lot. After a long time I so deliciously ate kimchi stew with rice that he brought here that I almost shedded tears. I was satisfied with his friendship that he ran the long way more than the delicious Korean food. He brought me here a little wine just enough to drink one time. I thought wine was very effective at times like today. For two months, even a sip of alcohol was not on my lips. My liver and kidney were too much burdened for the role of recovering from fatigue, so if I drink alcohol, my liver would blow itself up. But today I believe my liver will understand me without complaining even if I drink a glass of wine for the sake of my friendship with him. We usually had a drink at a wine bar over talking when we met in New York before. Friendship is touching our opponent's words with our ears. So it's good to drink a moderate amount of wine, for it will make us to speak frankly. An act of touching the other person's words while exchanging words is that of touching the other person¡¯s mind. Toasting a glass of wine with me, he taps me on the shoulder today, saying he's proud of me and wishing me a healthy and safe running to the end. Today his words not only touch my heart but also relieve my tired body.

I ate the most delicious meal in the world, that¡¯s the food of friendship, or the boiled rice with friendship. In fact, we can endure the hunger, but we can¡¯t endure the loneliness. ¡®How pleasant I am, for my friend who lives far away comes to me¡¯. When I need something deadly, it¡¯s the best friendship to know it and share it, whatever it is time or money.

It was, in fact, a trifling affair of connection that could have gone without any meaning. With a chance almost to work in the same company, We have been friends like my brother or senior and junior for nearly 20 years now and he even officiated at my late wedding. He¡¯s also been the one whom I always discuss any difficult things to me. The three secrets of longevity are said to be proper exercise, eating good food and good human relationships. Running across the vast American continent, I am not lonely because there are many good persons around me. A man is happy when he is in a warm magnetic field from someone¡¯s chest. The America is so big that there are many areas where smart phones can't work. The magnetic field of love is wide and vast enough to fit the frequency anywhere, no matter how far away it is. Life becomes rich when we are in the eyes of compassion.

At that time, I worked for a clothing company that had been founded only a few years before. My senior Mr. Ham also worked for an other clothing company and I got a lot of help from him because there were a lot of things to do. We also went on a business trip to the provinces together adjusting our schedule. Once, we went on a business trip to Houston, Texas, together and we had a drink together in the evening and stayed at the same hotel. The most memorable thing was that I played my first golf with him Galveston, a seaside resort in the southernmost part of Texas over the weekend. The first golf, the first hole on the first course, was a hole across the river. It is wonderful to fly a white ball across a small river that goes out to sea. But the beginner's ball never crossed the river. Nothing wonderful has ever happened to a novice golfer.

My favorite color is green. When I stand on a golf course with green grass and tree shades, I feel free and secured. Since then, living in the city and going out to the golf course with close friends every weekend has been my only pleasure. When a white ball flies beautifully, jumps up to the blue sky, falls on the green grass and rolls away, I also feel my all worries go up to the sky with the ball and it was good to experience the joy of their being scattered by the wind.

Golf and tennis have been my hobby for a long time, but after I've gained some leeway in my life around fifties, I went snow-boarding every weekend in winter, learned paragliding, and learned wake-boarding and wind-surfing in summer. I also learned horse-riding. By the time I was an all-around sportsman,

Around that time, Mr. Gu Je-gwan, a reporter for the Hankook Ilbo newspaper, who was paragliding with me, used to say, "Let's play a marathon together because you like sports and play tennis." Then I used to say, "Why run when exercise is supposed to be fun?

Running is not fun only hard and boresome?" I thought tennis was enough for my health. However, he kept begging to run a marathon only once, so I ran in the Central Park in Manhattan on the promise of "just once" , considering the friendship with the young friend who was younger nearly 20 years than I. I started running a marathon when I was at 50s with Mr. Gu. But when I started running the marathon, everything else turned sour suddenly. I soon fell in love with endless running.

On Sunday morning, Central Park was vibrant with cyclists, walkers with dogs, runners and couples walking hand in hand. The one-round road outside the park was 10 kilometers long. I started running with Mr. Gu. I am running hard in my own way, but people are passing by me quickly. Women go forward and even grandmother and grandfather go forward passing me. I haven't lived without doing any exercise, so I never imagined that ordinary women would run faster than I. I ran off to catch up with a woman passing by me in an uncontrollable rivalry. But soon after, I fell behind, gasping for breath. "They are people who run almost every day. Mr. Kang, you can catch up with them soon if you practice for three months more," the reporter said. "Hey! You asked me to do it just once and then practice for three months?" But I fell in love with the charm of running not only three months, but ever since then.

It is said that running opens up the right side of the brain and opens up the senses. This is one of the very important functions of running. We have been taught to live a life that relies on the logic-oriented left side of our brain , the basis of modern industrial society. Man's thoughts and logic are too narrow. When the right side of the brain develops, it becomes sensitive and creative. The

openness of the sense is the realization that nature in infinite space and I are one, not two. There is solitude in the marathon. The theory that a person is lonely is unquestionably true even when running. Even when many of us run together, we are independent like many islands floating in the southern sea. As I ran, I succeeded in being alone, and as I ran, I found a tunnel through people with a heated heart. I was never alone in running alone for such a long time, and I had to run my own share of the distance even when I ran in groups. It is our relationships that sometimes we are alone and sometimes we are forced to be together. We cannot avoid living together with others, sometimes loving and sometimes hating. If we can¡¯t avoid it, it is wisdom is to learn how to enjoy it.
