On October 9, 2013, Emory received a very special visit from one of its Presidential Distinguished Professor. His Holiness the Dalai Lama was making his third visit to the Emory University, allowing for Emory students to engage in intellectual as well as religious conversations through his teaching sessions. I was one of the lucky students who won the ticket to see His Holiness the Dalai Lama through the school lottery.

The session that I attended followed a format of a dialogue between His Holiness and Emory professors, discussing how to unite religious and secular principles under a collective set of morals. In the session, His Holiness described this idea under the term, ¡°secular ethics.¡± Once His Holiness entered the auditorium, we stood up and broke into an applause.

I was mesmerized to see His Holiness the Dalai Lama in person, whom I had heard many great things about. It felt like his presence alone unleashed an aura full of awe and wonder. But what captured my attention even more was the soft yet penetrating voice of His Holiness that echoed down the entire auditorium as he shared words of greetings to his audience. He was soon joined by the Emory faculty panelists for the discussion to begin.

The discussion began with the subject of how essentially, all human problems are rooted in ethics and thus, true ethics must be based entirely on people's behavior and incentive. To this subject, the Dalai Lama explained that secular ethics in itself does not reject doctrine. Rather it tests the ethical maxims with personal experience and evidence.

There were moments when we got to see the rather playful and honest side of the Dalai Lama. When Philippe Rochat, a psychology professor here at Emory, asked the Dalai Lama about the tendency for good and evil in human nature, His Holiness shrugged and playfully answered, ¡°I don't know.¡± Along with the others, I laughed at the playfulness of the Dalai Lama. After all, there were times when His Holiness did not know the exact answer to everything.

However, it did not discourage us from viewing His Holiness with admiration, as life is not about becoming an all-knowing individual. It is much more important that one is able to learn from the processes and be open to enlightenment. In addition, the Dalai Lama's failure to provide an exact explanation was a powerful moment for all of us – it showed that he was an honest individual and modest despite his profound knowledge and teachings. Thus, my respect grew even more from his honest response.

The discussion continued on with the question-and-answer format between His Holiness and Emory students. The students posed challenging questions to the Dalai Lama, such as questioning what constitutes an ethical economic system and what it meant for an individual to be useful in life. One also asked how leaders in this world can outline policies that would respect the foundations and perspectives of others. One even asked about what the Dalai Lama thought about the ethics behind the prison system and its conditions.

It was interesting to see the Dalai Lama at work, pausing to carefully think and craft his thoughts to each student's questions. Above all, I was jealous of the students who got to pose a question to His Holiness. Seeing them stand in front of him and asking thought-provoking questions made me envision myself doing the same thing in the near future. Hopefully, the next opportunity I get to see the Dalai Lama at Emory, I will be one of those lucky students who were able to engage directly with the Dalai Lama.
