Going beyond the ethnic background while retaining our core value is the ideal for any and every American. Nowadays, each one of us belongs on the world stage. It's up to each one of us how far we can go on that stage. It is a long, and demanding journey, at the same time, interesting, wonderful, rewarding task. This writing is a part of that task. - Dr. Myong D. Lee

The whole world is paying respect to Nelson Mandela. The question is why and how he became the man who command the respect and love. It is a very interesting human story as to how a man becomes a hero of such magnitude. This is a story which can teach us much about ourselves and the world, especially, at the time when respect and true hero are very rare.

To understand how Madiba, a boy from a small and poor village, had evolved into one of the most revered leaders in the world, we have to look at the person in his particular historical setting. It is the story of how he handled the situations forced upon him, and how he created the situations for other people.

Looking at him at the personal level, words like character, vision, insight, perspective, wisdom, courage, humor, initiative, humility, patience, and a dose of good luck come to mind. These are many words to describe a person but they fit him. Maybe not at every stage of his life, but each word can describe a particular time in his life. Some other words found to describe him are tolerance, compassion, generosity, eloquence, and a man of action.

He was a proud, courageous, and eloquent man with a sense of humor who found a cause he can be passionate about. The cause was the right cause with the history on its side. Apartheid was an attitude, let alone as a policy, not acceptable in South Africa and all over the world. In a way, the rest of the world made him the man he had become. Sanctions, boycotts, and demonstrations from outside forced the hands of the Apartheid government. The anti-Apartheid movement needed a face to rally around, and Mandela was chosen to be the face. The whole world was demanding "Free Nelson Mandela." In prison, he was already becoming a legend. There were bloody uprisings inside South Africa, and Apartheid South Africa wasn't functioning.

South Africa is a very complicated country in the sense that there are many different groups with many different agenda; tribal, cultural, racial, religious, political, and economic. To bring all of them together has been very difficult. In fact, the greatness of Mandela lies in the attempt to bring as many factions as possible together to create the free, democratic South Africa.

In his younger days, he wanted black South Africa. But he grows into the idea of multiracial country. Some claim his association with the Communist Party helped him form that belief because "the Communist Party was the only partner in the movement that included whites, Indians, and mixed-race members." Once he was an advocate for "armed struggle" and the press described him as "the Black Pimpernel." but later, at his trial, he claimed that "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony with equal opportunities."

He learns to talk to and to understand the Africaaners in the prison: learns Africaans. He starts the negotiation with government in the prison which brings the relaese of him from the prison and the free election where everybody has the right to vote. The rest is, as the saying goes, the history.

With his character, vision, and practicality Mandela chose the right path for the Country. Abraham Lincoln was from poor, isolated place and the family not well educated, but he had the inner confidence, insight, and the strength of character. When Lincoln ran for the Presidency he was not the best known candidate, but he knew he could win. His rivals, later, realized he was better than them as a leader, and worked for him. He had the confidence and magnanimity to bring his rivals into his camp. Both of them had continually evolved for the better by transforming himself along the way. Lincoln, also, chose the right path for his Country.

Now, Madiba belongs 'to the ages' just like Abraham Lincoln.
